THAT'S WHY GOD MADE THE RADIO

I finally heard last year's Beach Boys album for the first time recently, and here's their official video for its title track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAmk-Wk2pNA. Turning on the radio while cruisin' at 7 (yep, sure enough that's when "Secrets" starts!), and the word yesterday pops up in three other cuts -- gotta like that!
"Making this night a celebration / Spreading the love and sunshine to a whole new generation". I've played 80 different songs of theirs on my show so far.

The Beach Bums haven't been relevant in almost a quarter of a century. That's not such a "secret".

My guess is less every day,

and by the way that new album which i have heard is not very good, to me it sounds kinda slow, it doesn't have the energy of the early recordings. nice nostalgia but in the long run it will be forgotten like many other reunion albums

I never understood the appeal of the Beach Boys. IMO one of the most over-rated bands in history, like Rush is for rock.

I didn't mean for this to turn into a debate over the relative merits of the Beach Boys then vs. the Beach Boys now vs. the Beach Boys ever, but I will say that the CD was quite a bit better than I expected it to be. (That's why it took several months for me to hear it -- I was in no hurry to do so, knowing that it wouldn't/couldn't come close to equalling their 1960's albums.)
My main intent with the original post was to point out that yes, the Beach Boys are right, God did make the radio ... but then man came along and messed it all up, just like he's messed up a lot of other things. If you polled all of those young people in the video about what they REALLY thought about commercial FM radio today, they'd say that their #1 complaint is the same as everyone else's, which is that they hear nothing but the same few songs over and over and over again on it -- and that's why in real life they don't bother listening to it at all anymore. And they don't care how the program director has tried to disguise things; they know that this song repetition within a limited playlist happens and has been happening for a long time, because they're not as stupid as he thinks they are.
On the other hand, I respect their intelligence and make it possible for them and their parents and grandparents to go about "Capturing memories from afar" (specifically Columbus, Ohio), although they can only do that through internet streaming since California is outside of WCRS's broadcast range. And then yes, "Receiving your signal like a prayer" is what happens. A prayer that's been answered.

You're way late on the game with that album, Jake. I was playing it on my oldies station about a year ago...

Of course Jason... That's why it was "Yesterday's Top Secret" to Jake :)

I would say you would find the majority is happy with the way radio is today or things would change... People want the hits.. It's been proven time and time again... It's the reason stations like WNCI and WCOL are constantly tops in Columbus... Something must be going right.

I only play music recorded in the '60s, '70s, and '80s on my show, plus some early '90s stuff if it was released by a band that started in the '80s (and, conversely, late '50s stuff released by artists who continued on into the '60s). I never play anything current. If either of you two had ever listened to "Yesterday's Top Secrets", you would've known that. But you haven't, so you didn't.
That's Why God Made The Radio was released on June 5, 2012, so Jason, if you played it about a year ago, then you must've been sent an advance test pressing. I explained why I didn't make it a top priority of mine to check the thing out, and I don't apologize for that. I find your very brief I'm-hipper-than-you response somewhat disheartening, as I was expecting so much more from you!

I don't get the "RUSH" part either. The band Rush? Rush Limbaugh? Either way, it doesn't make too much sense to me! Kids today, I just don't understand what they're saying, although this post is from a presumably much older RF Man.

First saw the Beach Boys about 1981 and was disappointed at what the 70's had done to them.

They had become overproduced to where they did not have the freshness anymore.

The same thing happens to all artists, but it must be hardest of all for a group like the Beach Boys,
who hit it big in their extreme youth.

I listened to the song, and wish it had more energy and less soup.
It was about what I expected.

I'd say they've become more relevant since folk pop returned to alternative and top 40 radio over the past year or so. You can hear tons of Brian Wilson / Pet Sounds influences in so many bands today.

Pet Sounds and SMiLE deserve the credit they get. Their surfer pop is nice for what it is. I think my favorite track of their pop stuff is "All Summer Long".

Seriously, coming from a dubstep and alternative guy, Beach Boys are great.
