The 1.00 HD Radio

There's a thread going on the CTC board about a 1.00 radio sold at Wal Mart. Obviously a Analog Radio.

My question is, when do you all think we would get to the point of having a 1.00 HD Radio? I say that would be a long long long long time if ever and probably not a likely Scenario.
______________

Would be a nice thought, I am sure the "big corps" in radio would lothe that day, but I suspect it's many many years off.. speaking of HD radios, i woudlnt be suprised once prices start to drop a great deal to see the "big corps" give away IBOC Receivers as prizes on air!

Yeah, I was thinking that exact same thing.

No...The "big corps" in radio would not loathe that day, contrary to what you think..Part of the alliance's mission is to bring down the cost of receivers...But at the stage we are now, we're still to early to make radios that are versatile enough to be at parity with Walkmans, etc...That indeed is one of the things that has to be worked on.

HD radio will always be a premium item... well
past the time when a $2 bill won't even buy you
the cheapest newspaper or a tiny candy bar. Until
such time when analog radios won't have anything
to receive and they're not made any more.

Even today, about 4 decades past the advent of
color TV, you can still buy the cheapest generic
B&W TVs for as little as $12 (BrandsMart). I have
a similar $29 model on a small shelf in my kitchen
-- merely because it's narrower (with tuning on top)
and fits the shelf. I don't think I've ever seen a
cheap color TV for less than $79.

Maybe there would be a sceneario where someone (could be the radio companies, FCC, whoever) would want to get "HD" radio receivers out to everyone by all means possible, a deal is cut, and poof! $1 digital radios.

I'm sure the money would be made in the 15 minutes of ads an hour on the digital second program feeds, similar to how it already is on the main channels.
______________

Someone on one of these lists said they had 50 of them to give away. Usually items this expensive are given to major advertisers. Most major stations have a "prize closet" with expensive items to grease the skids with their best clients.

I think a station has to be very careful about giving receivers as prizes. Remember, the digital signal doesn't travel as far as the analog. What's the likelihood the winners will be beyond the digital signal?

Comments about one of the receivers on the market is that it's nearly deaf, especially to digital signals. That's a prize that'll come back to bite you. Sort of like a supermarket giving a shopping spree where you can only choose from out of date products.
