The 101.5 FM chain mail

Has anyone else gotten this e-mail? Sounds like made-up chain mail to me...

New Jersey will launch a 30 day speeding ticket frenzy. The state estimates that 9 million dollars will be generated in speeding tickets. 1 million will go to pay state troopers over time. There will 50 state troopers on duty at all times patrolling the 9 main intersections and highways.

They are the following: I-295 north and south, 1-95 (Jersey Turnpike) north and south, 1-80 east and west I-287 north and south, I-78 east and west, I-195 east and west 1-280 east and west Rt. 130 north and south Garden State Parkway north and south

Warning for everyone: Now 5 mph above the limit can justify a ticket and every state trooper is supposed to pull a car over and write a ticket every 10 minutes. They have issued 30 brand new unmarked Crown Victoria cruisers and they are bringing in all their part timers on full time. If you work in New Jersey, New York, or CT, you must take one of there interstates, routes, or parkways. It's up to you how fast you are doing when they do. I was told 101.5 FM confirmed all of this. So be safe and don't forget speeding tickets are on you.

You've been warned.
Good Luck

I sure have...

I got that e-mail yesterday, but let me ask you: did you e-mail 101.5 to confirm the legitimacy of the e-mail?

I do a lot of driving and want to know if this is truly for real or if the New Jersey State Police truly have a self-serving agenda.<P ID="signature">______________

There's nothing on Google News about it, and usually police like to announce these things ahead of time to get people to slow down, so I'm going to guess it's a hoax.

Of course, with July 4th weekend coming up, you know there's going to be tons of troopers out there looking for speeders anyway.

Given their competency (or lack thereof), I highly doubt each trooper could actually manage to pull over a speeder every 10 minutes. Nor is it possible to legitimately give a ticket for 5 MPH over the speed limit, due to speedometer error -- even right from the factory, there may be some cars whose speedometers read 5 MPH low, therefore those drivers don't even know they're actually speeding.

Gearhart talked about this this morning, and he said that NJ 101.5 did not confirm ANYTHING about this and it is an "urban legend".

1) Misleading thread title. Is it from 101.5? No. It just mentions the station. Besides, the imaging is all wrong. They NEVER ID themselves as JUST 101.5. It's ALWAYS New Jersey 101.5. It's like Z-100 calling themselves 100.3.

2) If the state REALLY wanted to make money, they'd promote the law they created a few years ago, 39:4-97.2 - Unsafe Operation of a Motor Vehicle. If you have a pretty clean driving record, you can plead your ticket, speeding or otherwise to this. You'll get no points, but you have to pay the state a 250 dollar surcharge.

3) Click-It or Ticket is the biggest moneymaking scam EVER EVER EVER. Those things New Jersey 101.5 DOES promote.

Re: I sure have...

Oh, brother....the only thing missing from that hooey is "I saw it on CNN." Though the "101.5" mention comes close. You can be sure if it's worded like that email, it's baloney.

Maybe they didn't exactly "confirm" it, but this was the topic of the Carton & Rossi rerun they aired in the 5pm hour Wednesday. Some of the highways mentioned were different (295 wasn't in there, Route 1 was) and I didn't hear them say all of the details (I only listened for a couple minutes), but here's the big thing--this was supposed to start at the beginning of May. So if it happened, and it lasted 30 days as it was supposed to, it's been over and done for a month!

If you do a lot of driving, just not speeding is probably the way to go. Just sayin.
