The 1st KILT

Early in the 1950s, Gordon McLendon sold 610AM-KLBS. A few years later, he bought it back. He wanted the call letters KNUZ and tried to buy them from Dave Morris, who owned KNUZ 1230. Dave didn'twant to sell. Since Gordon was the Ole Scotsman, he decided to take call letters which he already had in another market and moved them to Houston.

Scotmen wore kilts and so would 610AM.

Oh yes, indeed. When I arrived at KILT in 1984, I made a copy of those jingles. Alas, they disappeared in a move sometime later. Great jingle package.

Examining the logos for the KILT and the KNUZ tee shirts, I found that these logos appear to be copied from the Music Surveys of those times. I do not remember shirts with those logos. On the KNUZ shirt, the word "Sonic" appears. That was the title of the KNUZ music survey. It was known as the "Sonic 60." While I think the shirts look pretty cool, I feel they are not the reflection of any shirts at that time. Plus, there is nothing wrong with buying them. I want to make clear that I am not against the purchase. I am questioning the accuracy. I am compelled to point out that the KNUZ letters that were in use at the time, looked different. In fact, so different, that most KNUZ DJs at the time complained because it looked like KVLG. It was a capital red K, followed by lower-case red n-u-z. However, it was like an indiviudal hand written letter. I have a lot of KNUZ bumper stickers from that era. I would have to show you one to understand what I mean. Perhaps I can take a picture and email it.

Can you scan one and post it, Chuck?

They're not "authentic" shirts, Cafepress will print a shirt with any logo or photo on it.

I saw the same thing with shirts from other stations in other cities. They bore no resemblance to the shirts actually produced some 30 - 40 years ago.

I think probably any 'radio t-shirt' purporting to be from the 50s would be bogus, regardless of the authenticity of the logo. T-shirts in the 50s were white and the only logo was that of the maker on the inside of the collar. It wasn't until some time after tie-dying and silk-screening became all the rage in the mid to late 60s that t-shirts starting appearing as promotional items, much less as station apparel. Radio stations probably followed the lead of record labels and rock bands who started using t-shirts as promotional items in the late 60s. I have a few of rock bands from that era but no radio station shirts.

I can't think of any pics of radio personnel in the 50s or 60s that I've seen wearing anything like station apparel who had t-shirts on -- blazers, maybe, athletic jerseys maybe if they were on a station basketball, softball or volleyball team, but not t-shirts.
