The 2023 Oscars will restore all 23 categories to the live telecast

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is officially undoing a controversial change in programming enacted for the previous ceremony. The winners of all 23 Academy Award categories will be announced during the live telecast, after eight were bumped from 2022’s main broadcast, sparking outrage from those in the industry.

If you're watching any Disney-owned channel (such as ESPN), you're probably seeing a lot of promos for Sunday's Academy Awards.

Hey, someone has to do the patting-on-the-back around here. ;)

Nobody gives a flying fandango about the "Best Foreign Language Short Film" and stuff like that.

My take is the problem isn't the award, but the acceptance speech. They already have a clock on them, but they need to be eliminated completely. Just say "The winner is," and move on. Maybe give the award to them in the audience, rather than have the long walk to the stage. I watched the pre-awards at the Grammys, and you can wait a long time before the winner actually makes it to the stage. That needs to go.

Oh, the promotional campaign should be, "Make Oscars Boring Again".

The problem is the number of best picture nominees now. It used to be 5. Now it's 10 and they have to waste half of the show going over all of them.

Were the awards that were dropped handled like they do on the Grammys by announcing them as having been presented earlier? If that's the case they need to keep it and possibly add more.

It's complicated. The Academy Awards is more than a TV show. If the only factor was producing a TV show, then what you say makes sense. But it's put on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. They own the copywrite on the name and the award. So the TV producers have to work with the Academy in doing the show. Obviously the Academy wants a lot of people to watch. But they also have to contend with their members, who make up the movie industry. The members all want to be seen on TV. As a result, the TV show becomes a zebra, where a compromise took place. I'll be curious to see exactly what that compromise was. How do they fit in all the awards and keep people watching through what will probably be a five hour show? The Grammy pre-show is how the recording academy dealt with the hundreds of categories they have. Even there, the speeches are timed and must be less than a minute, including the time it takes to get to the stage. That's why I suggested eliminating that time it takes to get the winners to the stage. Maybe have the winners already on stage when the category is called. I don't know. We'll see.

I knew The Oscars went into overtime why even say 3 hours more like 3 hours & 40 minutes? The show needs to be cut why I don't watch it as I only watch one movie that is up for nomination.

No, I enjoy the speeches.

There's a lot of time being wasted on stuff that doesn't matter.

It was scheduled for 3.5 hours so if it went 10 minutes over that’s not too bad.

My TiVo said it was supposed to end at 11.

I haven't watched it all but I made sure to watch the last 40 minutes. That was called "Eyewitness News at 11". I recorded that separately.

Like sports, award shows do not have accurate end times. TiVo has no way of knowing when it might really end. So when I record something like that I had an extra hour on my TiVo.
