The 3rd Annual New Format for 106.3

It's May, so you know what that means... time for Pittman to spin the format wheel again at 106.3 in Lafayette.

This year, we seem to have landed on a simulcast of the Urban AC format of 105.9 KFXZ-FM. Meh.

I wonder what they'll flip to next May? A simulcast of the fringe-conservative talk format of 1520 KFXZ, where they can't seem to hit the local triggers? Seriously, I've never heard them break away from the satellite feed—no promos, no local spots, no legal IDs (!!!)... just filler PSAs and bumper music.

It is strickly McGruber radio over there. Calling it McGuyver radio would be an insult to the greatness that is Harry Dean Anderson. It is instead a rip off of something that should be called radio. It's kinda like going to Wal-Mart and wanting to purchase the name brand product but you buy the Great Value version because it saves you 50 cents. It may have all the same ingredients as the name brand but it just doesn't quite taste the same as the name brand. I am not saying it can't be done without having a name brand that denotes quality. You just have to care about the quality of YOUR product more than the other guys. So if you want to build a brand with popsicle sticks and bubble gum go ahead and be my guest. McGruber your way through life and see where it gets you.

With 2 Class As, one SE of Lafayette and the other N of Lafayette, why doesn't a simulcast make sense? Neither can cover the market by themselves. KFXZ just broke through ratings wise. Why not try to build on that?

As for the AMs, anyone that puts Jeff Cruere on in Acadiana with the stunning success that he's had on WGSO and WTIX, is a programming genius (like Jim Brown, my tongue is firmly in my cheek). Maybe he's just biding his time hoping he can get Rush from KPEL.

C MURDER, activestatic....i agree...it is what it is..

NO PROMOTION, NO COMMUNITY AWARENESS, NO IDEA OF WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON.

GOD, I WANT TO BE THE DOC WHEN I GROW UP!

Jeff Crouere was on both KVOL and KKAY for sometime but was pulled after a couple of mornings of his show being replaced with a syndicated feed. My guess is the show isn't ready for syndication even on a small level. nolaradiobuff is correct right the simulcast just making sense. Besides why would you keep a format on the air longer than a year if it isn't working. Country (too much competition), AC (too much competition), Rap and Zydeco (too much competition, atleast on the Rap side).

I may have been a little harsh on Pittman—

I was trying to draw more attention to the fact that you can pretty much set your watch to the format changes on 106.3, and while I agree that simulcasting 105.9 is a good move for them, I would have personally liked to see something come to that frequency that Lafayette doesn't already have, like a Gen X-90s format, or an indie-leaning alt-rocker (as opposed to Planet's Nu-metal/Active focus), or a rhythmic AC, or even the Hot/Modern AC format they had in 2008, which fit nicely between KSMB and KTDY.

Also, it seems that they've finally gotten on the ball at 1520—shortly after they flipped 106.3 to simulcast Z, 1520 switched to Urban Gospel using the Rejoice! satellite format with local breaks and IDs. Good move on that one—I think with a commitment, it'll have a good chance to survive.
