The 5 most ENTERTAINING people on Boston Radio...

coops said:
Though not from Boston, I'd like to chime in about how entertaining Loren Owens was when he worked in Philly and 95WPEN when they were oldies. His bits were quick and funny and took aim at Camden, NJ whenever he had the chance. Just chipping in my 4 cents

I am also from Pennsylvania...and do you remember who Loren Owens newsman was on 95PEN in the 1970's ??? It was Rod Allen Fritz. I suspect the same Fritz that worked in Boston all these years. Someone needs to hire him, soon.

Can you really count Gil and Gino as entertaining Boston radio people? Were it not for the patriots neither would really be on radio. Gil essetially reads what is happening in sports without much more than a "this is what's happening" perspective. It's also interetsing how quickly some are referred to as legendary largely because they ahev beena round a very long time. Gil I would say is pretty legendary but Im speaking generally.

They're the broadcast team for the radio broadcast of Patriots games, hence making them radio people. Same logic applies to Johnny Most, the legendary voice of the Boston Celtics for so many years.

Lucy, you raise another good point. Some people stay too long. I don't think that's the case with Gil and Gino, but the argument certainly could be made that it is.

"Legendary" is word that might not apply, anyway. These are radio entertainers, whether they do talk shows, music, sports or news. Bob Raleigh, former overnights on WBZ, also worked on WHDH and the D.C. market, accurately said (don't ask where he stole this from, I doubt it was original) that what they do is like writing in the sand. As soon as the next wave crashes ashore, it's gone.

>>Jordan Rich.

Nice guy, relaxing voice, too. He has a friend of mine, Frank Ochieng, on every couple months (next
appearances: talking TV on Feb 2, talking movies on March 3) as part of Movie Night/TV Night

WEll gee whiz thanks for the informative defintion of how being on the radio, and also being people makes them "radio people"....... ::). Since you did not read or did not understand my post I will explian. The point of the trhead was "entertaining radio people" and my point was other than giving the account of the game can you count them as "entertainers" or "entertaining"?. I think your point about Johnny Most is a little different. Most is without a doubt a legend and whether the Celtics were winning or losing Most was ALWAYS entertaining which is different than simply calling a game. " JoJo he fiddles, he diddles" there was much more style to the way that Most called the game than the way that Gil and Gino do. That is not to say that they do not do the games WELL, THEY DO. It is just a different vibe than someone liek Johnny most.

Points well taken. Johnny Most was a who different type of broadcaster. He was as much the show as the game. I still find Gil and Gino entertaining. Was it the first Super Bowl win or the second, when they broke into an impromptu rendition of "We Are The Champions?" Great stuff, coming from the heart. Two guys who live, eat and breathe this team. I listen to 'em for at least part of each Patriots game, so in my book, they're entertaining. And yes, they're radio people in my book. Especially Gil, who makes his bread and butter in radio. I don't know what Gino has on the side, if anything.

Your point is also well taken. It really amounts to each ones own taste. I never found Gil Santos to be much more than a guy with a deep voice who called football games allthough I know he is revered he never struck me as particularly "entertaining". Johnny Most on the other hand I always thought was almost as much the attraction as the games he called and I am actually a bigger fan of football than I am of Basketball.
