The 80s at 8 Starting Monday on 102.9 The Big D

Totally excited....ever since PLJ dropped their 80s at 8 its been a missing part of my life...kudos to DRC

Funny how 80s music is now on the "oldies" ... errr...classic hits stations

1980 was indeed 29 years ago...good gravy

It actually started two weeks ago. It only takes up a half-hour -- I guess there aren't enough '80s titles in the library yet to fill out an hour a day, four days a week, without heavy repetition -- and some interesting titles have been played so far: Billy Joel's "Sometimes a Fantasy," Blondie's "Rapture," INXS's "Need You Tonight," Sheena Easton's "Morning Train," John Cougar Mellancamp's "Cherry Bomb" ... these songs sure sound strange at 102.9. It's also making for some jarring segues at the end of the '80s set: Last week, we got "I Just Died in Your Arms" into "The Horse," "Everything She Wants" into "Get a Job," "Careless Whisper" into "Splish Splash," and "These Dreams" into "I've Been Lonely Too Long."

Also, the 10:00 hour of Grahame's show seems to have become a "twin spin" hour, a chance to hear tracks like the Rolling Stones' "Heart of Stone," the Temptations' "Since I Lost My Baby" and Billy Joel's "Allentown" on the back end of those double plays instead of the songs more frequently played on the station.

One of the new liners being used goes something like "It isn't just the music we play ... (snippets of a few songs) ... it's how many different songs we play! 102.9 DRC-FM, Hartford's Big D!" Looks like they're in one of their "Let's play a little of everything for a while and see what sticks" phases again.

They should use a big voice bumper. And laser sound effects.

Yes! Make it sound like KISS did back in the day! Bill Rock's certainly got the voice for it (he does all of DRC-FM's imaging), now let's get those lasers going, Grahame!

I'm 54, but I'm still a big fan of the music -- and radio -- of the mid-'80s.

Even New London's KOOL 101 is starting to cautiously sprinkle in more 80's tracks than the current staples such as Orbison's "You Got It" and Irene Cara's "Fame" and "Flashdance." For example, last week, for the first time, they started playing songs from the late Michael Jackson, including "Billie Jean" and "Beat It."

I think WDRC has played stuff as late as 1989 or even 1990 recently. I may be wrong. Perhaps that's why their previous oldies format has been relegated to WDRC-FM HD 2.

They're playing Junkie XL's "A Little Less Conversation," which is even more recent. Of course, it's underpinned by a '60s Elvis recording.

But yes, the entire '80s decade is now fair game for the oldies/classic hits format. And why shouldn't it be? All the songs from it are at least 20 years old. DRC-FM and other stations in the format are all chasing a moving target, the 35-54 listener. As listeners who were heavy Top 40 radio listeners in the '60s and '70s age out of the target demographic, a station can either keep playing those listeners' favorite songs and lose all appeal to advertisers or try to capture the '80s Top 40 fans with their music, but not so much of it as to lose the baby boomers entirely. So you have "Windy" into "Bad Case of Loving You" into "I'll Take You There" becoming a typical set on an oldies station instead of "Don't Be Cruel" into "Big Girls Don't Cry" into "Build Me Up Buttercup."

The big difference between DRC and other oldies stations in transition is that DRC still plays songs like "Get a Job" and "Splish Splash," which other stations apparently think drive off the younger end of the target audience.

Every thread about DRC-FM you hijack to bring up KOOL 101. You're obcessed with them. It's sick because they're not even in your own market!!!!!!!!! (At least my station obcession is in my own market). Go back to The Bronx and stay there!

Wow....Is it a bad thing to compare two quality stations of the same format on a board? This board never ceases to amaze me...

MarcB: At least these 2 stations have more of an impact than the station you're obsessed with over in Southington. Compared to them, WXCT with YOU on the air had as much of an impact as a fart in a hurricane! Pot calling the kettle black, buddy. Tell you what, we'll let DToTheJ stay off the Connecticut Board when you stay off the Nassau/Suffolk/Long Island Board. Fair enough? At last check, this is a Radio-Info board, not a MarcB's Personal Agenda Board!

I'm doing my own thread hijacking now. ;D

Adam,

When is WMAS-FM turning on the XMAS Music?

Too much time on your hands, MarcB? ::)

Nothing else to do since I'm unemployed. Though today I spent 5 hours with a friend helping him get set up on FACEBOOK, watching TV, and trying to explain to him why his computer and overhead lights in his office is causing interference on the AM band on his radio.

I'm not sure what shocks me more, that you're unemployed or that you answered that question by telling us everything you did today.
