The "ABC" Radio sale

Just to let the guy know who's arguing with David below.

Emmis is not in the running for the assests.

And these guys say so.

www.radioandrecords.com

In fact, they are not in the running for anything right now other then paying down debt and possibly going private. And I hear that's a likelyhood as the baseball deal that Jeff was going to do with Alfred has crashed.

Sorry KM for posting this, I had to let the guy know the deal. And if this thread turns into another bad apple, well, I will close it myself if KM doesn't.<P ID="signature">______________

Go back and read the full article. A big "if"
still hangs in the air.

Agreed.

But that was not the point I was trying to make. The point I was trying to make to that poster was that more then one company was in the running for the assests and no one really has a exclusive lock on the assests.

In fact, the Disney deal may unravel for many reasons, including too high of a price for mediocore assests.(WABC and WLS the exception).

Yes....more than one company in the running.
That was my point.
Emmis among them. Believe me, they've weighed it.
So is Entercom and the others David had mentioned.

Actually I believe the most likely scenario is: Disney doesn't sell.

ESPN Radio doesn't sell. We've heard that before, but is that limited to ABCRN's interest in ESPN content, or ESPN stations? Is 710 part of the deal, for example?

ESPN radio and Disney radio are run as part of those two respective brands, not as a radio operation. ABC has said over and over that neither will be sold... neither the nets nor the stations.

Radio Disney must be operated by the real estate division, because the unrated upper-band AMs they own, which could be valuable as news/talk or other AM-friendly formats, seem wasted. The $4 million they paid in (IIRC) 2000 here in Phoenix for the market's only D/N 50kW signal is a bargain compared to what someone who actually planned to bill something would pay for it.

I've never tried, but I've heard the night pattern of KMIK 1580 can often be DXed in eastern parts of Riverside and SB counties where KBLA dies out. True, or wishful thinking? I'd tend to think the latter.

Fuhgeddaboutit!! Their signal you can hear in almost ALL of Orange County and that's even befor sunset in months like December and January.
Here is NO LIE: Last year in Orange County I was driving on the 5 Freeway where it intersects with the 55 Freeway (Tustin/Santa Ana area) in mid-December at 1:30 in the AFTERNOON and KMIK was already interfering with 1580 KBLA.
Their daytime signal is non-directional BTW and their nighttime is directional with 6 towers! For their night pattern, see:

www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KMIK&service=AM&status=L&hours=N

You're probably aware that most of KBLA's 50kw signal goes out over the ocean!

Re: Radio Disney

You don't understand. Radio Disney isn't about direct revenue. It's about conditioning pre-teens to the Disney brand.

It goes like this: you get the little knee-biters hooked on Radio Disney so that they believe that everything related to Disney is sunshine and light and necessary for breathing. They associate a "good feeling" with the Disney brand, which they then carry with them through adolesence and into adulthood, thus strengthening the brand and producing folks predisposed to spending more money on Disney products.

It's a long-term strategy, and it's all about mind-share, not billing. Marketing all the way.
