The Andalusia Giant

Tibbs was reminiscing about 98.1... "I think you weren't in the Panhandle when 98-one Classic Rock was playing the absolute best REAL classic rock in America. It kicked with a screwed up signal and a great staff (Z-Man, CJ Whitmore, etc.) Calls were WXCR, prior to the great sell off --- ah, the last of the good old days. Often number 2, behind 99 Rock and Country105.5 (I think) but still strong and a blast. No station I have seen plays today 20% of that playlist."

I thought this one might deserve its own thread.

Correct--when I rolled in, it was already 98 Surf (or Surf 98?)--trying to be the local CHR, since JLQ had flipped... and Z hadn't yet arrived. Not bad, as I recall--just never quite compelling enough to overcome the rimshot signal from that huge tower up in Alabama. Then the move to Holt... the sorry excuse for sportstalk... and now downgraded to a 500 foot stick in the middle of FWB with everyone else.

But... but... with 100-kw where it covers actual humans, it would appear to have a shitload of legitimate potential.

I'd be curious to know more about the old days as the Andalusia Blowtorch.

But also--what should they do with it now?

redneckriviera,

I've been reading this board ever since it first started and have been a member of it a time or two, but never kept up with it full time. I guess this maybe my first post here ever...hey, maybe more to come.

It was your reminiscing about 98.1 when it was located in "Andalusia" years ago. I too remember the good-ole days..... But for me, I had the privilage of actualy working several years in the old WKYD-"Surf" 98.1 building. Radio today is not what it was at all.
I was fortunate to be of that era when there were no computers. Durring my time in the old building, I had the chance to make a good friend who was the former PD and then GM of KYD. Still today we hangout from time to time and do that reminicing of radio. Radio had its own little world then. Some hilarious things back then now when you look back.
Its good to know that someone knows of and remembers 98.1 . Of course there is a handful that worked there that we stay in regular contact via phone or email.
I didn't come to know some of the history but a couple years later after KYD had left for the beach.... The station that is still occupying the old building is my former employer....great people...loved working there.
I am enroute back to alabama in the next week or so. Looks as if my return to radio is well on its way.....Just can't shake that radiobug once its in the blood I guess.
