Sorry to hear about Pal Al being let go. Along with a demotion of a sales manager and firing a receptionist that was probably being paid minimum wage, that is going to make a BIG dent in the Entercom budget. Yeah Boy. Never really listened to Al on Magic because it is simply too boring, but met him back in his WCKW days in the 90’s. Nice guy but that’s who they seem to get rid of first. And, what impeccable timing from those worthless, corporate management suck-ups. It’s anybody and anything to save their precious salary.
I would have loved to have been in on that meeting when they told him. “We know you just lost your last surviving parent only three weeks ago but with economic cuts, we’re going to terminate our relationship with you. We are going in a different direction by making the last two jocks double up on their duties but cut their salaries and fill your position with someone else. Do you remember the way to the elevator? And by the way, when is the memorial service for your dad?” And who is this Andy James wannabe, who has the personality of a cypress knee? That’s a real slap in the face, putting someone that lame in his place. It’s like listening to fingernails running down a chalkboard.
If Entercom wanted to make some serious headway in budget cutbacks, get rid of the deadwood on WWL. Show some onions, start by putting Boob Mitchell out to pasture. That old cow is WAY past his time and couldn’t do anything without riding other people’s coattails. I heard him Thursday afternoon with Hokie Gajan…the Joke and the Poke. Going into a commercial break, he said they would next be talking with someone from the Carolina Panthers but couldn’t recall him name. Nice prep, pal. It turns out to be a beat writer for the Charlotte Observer. The man has no clue. Then, he hosts a home improvement show, please. Lose Tucker while you’re at it too. His self-indulgent sense of humor or lack there of, is only funny to himself. Maybe Boomtown could use him as a standup after the bands to clear out the joint. Losing those two would save a boatload of beans and there’s more walking the halls.
According to a story on All-Access Thursday, Entercom has been swinging the budget machete in Sacramento, Portland, Boston, Milwaukee, Denver and Kansas City. It’s mainly poor, on air folks and producers. Why not lose Kaplan in Seattle? Oh I forgot, that’s Uncle Pat’s boy. Never mind. Plus, they are moving management into programming positions? Bright, considering they’re biggest the reason business has gone south. Trim some of the corporate fat and it might seem believable.
I’ll be impressed when some of the management and scum-sucking corporate pigs get slaughtered but I’m sure they’ll be saved to the end. I hope they took a bath with their stock options. (Closed at 1.40 and removed from the S&P) It couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of folks who benefitted from the sweat of others and destroyed the business of radio. Ms. Field has done his father proud. My guess, there will be a fire sale by the end of the year or she’ll look to Congress for a bailout. The corporate yahoos made their bed. Now they get to sleep in the soiled sheets from all of their BS they have been dishing out. Sweet dreams folks.
And like smashedcd said, it’s over. Entercom has thrown the last shovel on their grave and brought a lot of good folks under with them. What a classless act!
