The Band Jocks?

By using some name jocks, you get a couple things. First, as just mentioned, a little buzz...some jocks have enough of a following yet to give you a tenth or 3 in the ratings, something worth real money in a market the size of SF. Secondly, even on vanilla voice tracks, they can knock out tracks that sound better in less time that a Joe Schmo jock from Dingdongville. They also know what to do without being told in granular detail...something those who have hired and managed major market talent are quite aware of.

It happens all over the country - Cousin Brucie in New York, Dick Biondi in Chicago, Jim Ladd in Los Angeles...I think I mentioned Steven Seaweed on The Bone. Robert W. Morgan and The Real Don Steele were the cornerstone of K-Earth for a few years until their untimely passing.

Perhaps they still had good ratings. Look at it this way: Why would a PD not hire a DJ with a local name? Someone does not get to become a PD because they're stupid. I don't doubt that PDs listen to lots and lots of auditions and go over past performance of various DJs.

Why do you think they have jocks like Wink Martindale and Gary Owens on the MOYL format? They could probably save a few bucks by plugging in no-name guys from Ohio.

Neither Wink nor Gary Owens are on MOYL these days. The only "known" DJs I'm familiar with are Gary Marshall and Pat Boone.

Looking over some of what they are playing isn't this a bit like "The Drive"? Wasn't that on a different SF station?

As a listener, I'm glad I don't suffer the whims of the Clear Channel format of the month!

Not to CC if you're not doing well in the revenue department there just might be a good reason.

95.7 The Drive was similar, but it wasn't a Clear Channel station. It was Bonneville's second or third attempt to make a success out of the 95.7 frequency. Talk about "format of the month" - the others were Z95.7 (Top 40), The Bear (country) and Max-FM ("Jack"). None survived. But Entercom has seemingly made a success out of 95.7 with a country format, so why shouldn't Clear Channel try Classic Rock again?

This is only the second format on 103.7 since Clear Channel purchased the station over a decade ago - they inherited the Smooth Jazz format from the prior owners. So I'm not sure I'd accuse them of going for the "format of the month."

By the way - if any of you are missing Smooth Jazz, tune in 98.1 HD2. They're playing a syndicated format called "The Smoothest Place on Earth"...or something like that. Smooth Jazz mixed with soft rock and "old school" soul - not unlike the former KKSF. I didn't listen for long because it was putting me to sleep behind the wheel, but it even has VTed jocks, unlike most HD2 stations.
