The Band obviously Classic Hits Now

Don't think there's any debate now, The Band is full on Classic Hits. Any thoughts?

Just checked their 555 song play list. There are probably a couple dozen songs that would have been a little too "Classic Rock" for the old KFRC. But the list includes "Don't Pull Your Love Out" by Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds - one of the most insipid Top 40 hits (in my opinion) which no respectable Classic Rock station would play. Ever.

Considering 90% of the list are uh...classic "Classic Hits" - I'd say you ain't wrong.

Listened today for a few hours.....Blah! Boring!

Just not very good yet....Maybe they're easing in to it, but why?

Programmers....If you're reading this.....Listen to KOOL/PHX or KEarth/L.A......This just isn't that hard??

Agreed that it's same-old, same-old.  In their last incarnation KFRC used to throw in stuff like Boz Scaggs' "We Were Always Sweethearts" and other SF-specific oddities. I just heard "Rocket man" -- sheesh, KFOG plays that 87 times a month

Speaking of, in an attempt to cover all the bases, KFOG has been playing things like "Danny's Song" (the Loggins/Messina version) and David Essex's "Rock On" which were never in the mix before. Struck me as rather odd.

I agree, I think KRTH's a lot more fun to listen to. But it occurs to me that the people who post here aren't your typical radio listeners. I just drove a half hour down 880 with The Band on the whole way - not a single commercial - and Celeste Perry opened the mike only twice - once to tell people to call for some contest - the second time to congratulate the winner. The rest was all sweepers between the songs.

If you asked most people if they'd like more than 30 minutes of uninterrupted music, with no commercials, and practically no talk - they'd probably say that was ideal.

I don't know? KRTH and KOOL both seem to connect with their audiences, both thru the music and the DJ's.

KRTH's DJ's, though kind of canned, are really good and seem to add life to the format.

KOOL'S DJ's are really good too and are given more lateral freedom to talk on air.

Both play great music (which is most important) and seem to actually care about the format.....Which in turn, makes for a station that sounds & feels "alive", if you will...

Translates very positively to the audience and makes for good, fun-to-listen-too radio!....Rating's wise, can't argue with either station's approach!

The Band has a long way to go!

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout: Just heard The Band play Tom Jones, "It's Not Unusual". That, and JJ Jackson's "But It's Alright", which I heard earlier, are steps in the right direction.

Personally, I couldn't agree more. I'm not familiar with KOOL, but I visit LA often, so I know KRTH - I don't generally stream radio at home, I prefer i-pods & CDs.

In LA, you hear KRTH everywhere - playing in elevators and businesses - kind of like KOIT here. But I think KRTH has a different kind of connection with listeners in the Southland. The station has had the same format for most of the last 38 years - it's an LA institution. I think that makes a difference. Baby boomers there get to wallow in nostalgia provided by the station's KHJ pedigree, while the station still apparently attracts an adequate number of listeners in their 30s and 40s. By contrast, KFRC (as an Oldies/Classic Hits station) never built that kind of loyalty - it began on 99.7 about 20 years after KRTH (in 93 or 94), and folded in 06 or 07, while KRTH continues to prosper (I consider that 106.9 mess an aberration). And even at their best, KFRC never hired those great heritage jocks like KRTH did - with the exception of Bobby Ocean, of course. Cammy Blackstone was notthe local equivalent to Robert W. Morgan. Ron Parker was no Big Tom Parker. You get the idea...

The KRTH style of radio probably costs more money (top notch DJs, Bill Mann jingles, etc). Sadly, I'm sure Clear Channel would rather do it on the cheap.

Lkeller,, you left out one of KFRCs Great Heritage Jocks, none other than Mr John Mack Flanagan,,, this is one guy who can hold you to the radio!!!! Ten Ron Parkers, and a dozen Cammie Blackstones cant compare to JMF,, hey John if you read these,, your still number one in my book!!!!!!!! As for the Band, i listened for a 1/2 hour , and heard Elvis, and Suspicious Minds from 1969, but didnt want to miss anymore, so right back to 1260 KYA,,, where you can hear The real original Chris Edwards, and Tall Tom Campbell.. Theres nothing better than the Apple iphone4, and 1260 KYA all day long! Kenny in Concord

Oldies radio is personality driven and the jock is just as important as the music, like cracking the mic open every other song and jingles as well. High energy oldies and jocks make for some good radio

Agreed, but sadly - that's not how modern radio is programmed. The DJs rarely open the mike, and when they do, they're in and out in 10 seconds. How much "personality" can you communicate to the listeners when you have 10 seconds every fifth song? Bill Drake jocks like The Real Don Steele were talk-show hosts by comparison - talking up to the post, and over the fade out on practically every song.

Even on KRTH, the jocks mostly read liners, and there are still only a couple of them that show any real personality - Shotgun Tom Kelly is one. The station seems to give their people a precious few more seconds to talk compared to stations like The Band. If you ever get to Palm Springs, check out Bob O'Brien on KDES. He's another.

Lkeller-

Give KOOL/PHX a listen. All the jocks are good & have much more freedom then KRTH's. Steve Goddard in the afternoon is especially entertaining.

KIFR- You can still catch JoJo Kincaid on Q-105 (afternoons) out of Tampa Bay.

Don't think personality radio is dead at all....With the advent of Satellite & Internet radio, I think terrestrial radio is going to have to trend back towards Personality radio....If people can get 1000's of free stations/Jukeboxes anywhere, what will keep them tuned in to terrestrial radio??

Listening to Ron Michaels this morning, they said listen today at 3pm for an annoucement "that will change Bay Area Radio" let the speculation begin!
