The battle for the Christmas numbers is ON!!

At 12 noon today Magic 105.3 went all Christmas. Q101.9 went all Christmas on 11/20/09. In my opinion, Magic sounds 10x better with their upbeat Christmas playlist than Q. Last year, Q had better numbers but Magic has been doing better with the early PPM's. In both 25-54 & 35-54 Magic is #5.

Top 5 18-34
#1 Y100
#2 Mix96
#3 KJ 97
#4 KISS
#5 Jack

Top 5 25-54
#1 Y100
#2 KONO
#3 Jack
#4 KZEP
#5 Magic

Top 5 35-54
#1 KONO
#2 Jack
#3 Y100
#4 KZEP
#5 Magic

Btw, where's WOAI, KTSA & KPWT? :D No one in SA cares for the conservative b/s.

Conservative or liberal or "progressive" or whatever, its all b/s. People listen to the radio for music, not to hear some bozo vomiting his 'informed opinion' to the misguided, brainless truth seekers. So where is the only non-conservative, totally unbiased and wholly objective NPR lackey KSTX in these ratings? Also, I am unable to understand how people can listen to non stop Christmas music, especially BEFORE Thanksgiving or December? Why not play it all year 'round? I guess its just because we don't like each other's choices of music, eventhough we all think we know better and everyone else is wrong.

I have said this for years. I completely agree. However egotistical radio personalities would like to think otherwise.

Well, given the national numbers for certain syndicated programming, I can only assume that there are millions of people listening to bozos vomiting their "informed opinion" to the misguided brainless truth seekers! ::)

After all, one bozo's salary is less than a jock plus music royalty payments, I guess...... :-\

How are these "ratings" obtained? If the surveys are conducted over the telephone, do these "ratings" rely solely on landlines? What about people who only have cellphones? I don't know about anyone else, but I don't answer calls from stray phone numbers that I do not recognize and I'm sure that a survey conductor was probably one of them. I have lived here for over 40 years and have never been contacted or asked to participate in a ratings survey of any type. However, every year for the past 8 years, my wife gets the privilege of participating in the Neilsen TV ratings sham. Now we know why there is nothing worth watching on any TV channel, be it on satellite, cable or OTA! Why don't these "ratings" gurus conduct their surveys at our local Walmarts, instead of basing the success or demise of a radio station/format on the replies from a handful of cretins who can't seem to go through life without a cellphone stuck in their ear?

What happens to the station's DJs during this non stop onslaught of holiday cheer and goodwill toward that idiot who just T-boned you in the intersection? I know that Q101.9 KQXT doesn't have any, but does Tragic 105.3 still employ live, bipedal, breathing, human DJs? If so, what happens to their paychecks, or are they furloughed w/o pay? Maybe they're the ones ringing that bell by that black kettle in front of the Chinamart?

Diaries. People record their radio listening over the course of the week in a diary. You would have to answer the call from Nielsen before they'll send you the diaries.

There has been reference here lately to PPM ratings. Those are from Portable People Meters, a technology that's apparently new to these markets and explained at the link.

If it is by cell phone or wireless device where the called party is charged it is illegal under the TCPA (NOT The TSR two different sets of laws here) and most reputable survey companies download lists from NeuStar which provides lists of numbers ported from wireline to wireless and vise versa so they won't be sued or fined from FCC or Average Joe Citizen. They should conduct surveys on the internet, in malls, and stores like Wal Mart but they now are transforming the surveys with PPM Portable People Meters which if you listen to the station the device captures. So if you hate all your stations don't have the radio on during their scan. So why would they invest in expensive surveys when they are in the process of upgrading so they rely on a select group of people long story short a smaller sampling of maybe just a couple of neighborhoods. Also they are more likely to call you if your number is listed with your address and it is a common name like Mike Smith or Roberto Rodriguez. I was called once by a survey company back in 2002 and before Number Portability (I had a medical center prefix in San Antonio and guess where a good portion of the Radio Station companies were located? near the Medical Center plus it was listed even though address was omited. They would rather call a 210-614 prefix than say 210-637 (on the northeast side of town)

What happens to the DJs when these radio stations go all Christmas All of the Time? Furlough, lay off, vacation, new career path?
