The Beast AM 980 SOLD!

Wonder if the Trust's broker axed Steve Ballmer if he would like to buy the station his Clippers are heard on? The owner of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche recently purchased 9~Fifty in Denver for $3.8m. The KCLP call letters are available for Ancient Modulation...just sayin'

The sale is at 8.million. not 15 million as reported by Radio insight.
And it looks like desi980 was registered as well.

If I remember correctly the LA Kings have it in their contract with 790 that they are the only sports team on the station.

Contracts can be renegotiated and memorandums of understanding attached to existing contracts. Happens a lot in labor negotations with unions, no reason why -- as an example -- the "only team" provision is superceded by a MOU stating that Kings games must be aired live rather than tape delay, with no pre-emptions or farming of a broadcast to another station. That kind of agreement gives the team essentially what it wants (protection from another team conflicting with its broadcasts) while giving Cumulus flexibility to to sign ... say, an NFL team moving into L.A.?

No self respecting NFL team is going to sign up with non-sports KABC with their puny signal.

But the Raiders might do it.

It's much more likely that the games would go to an FM. That's the national trend for NFL teams, as the games don't overpower a music station as baseball does.

My big question. Where will Jim Rome end up? He is something of a Los Angeles institution to those of us in the small minority (as small as ethic groups apparently!) who listen to sports talk radio.

Also, I think CBS would be smart to sell this station at this price even if they could keep it. That being said 980 Los Angeles is worth much more imho than 1550 San Francisco, driving around both regions extensively it seems that KFWB serves all of Los Angeles and Orange County well, thats not much in the very spread out metro that is the greater Los Angeles region. However 1550 only seems to serve the cities of San Francisco and Oakland, err pretty okay in most spots. 1550 sounds like total crap in San Jose, aka the Orange County of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay area. San Francisco and Oakland by themselves aren't even LA by it's self.

In LA to get Nielsen ratings, it appears that a station needs about a 10 mV/m signal. KFWB only covers about half the LA Metro Survey Area (LA and Orange Counties) with that sort of signal, and the areas it covers best are predominantly ethnic.

Just jump back to The Mighty 1090... what's old is new again.

Except that most LA market listeners can't get XEPRS with a clean signal.

He could go back to Santa Barbara and do the afternoon drive traffic reports on News-Talk KTMS and its sister station CHR KHTY (Y-97) ...

... oh. Sorry. 1250 is now Spanish-language and 97.5 is a EMF station. Never mind.
