The Beat 98.5 vs Competition ???

First off.

I'm not a beat hater.I have many friends that work for the beat and my opinion is just the things in my head..... here we go!!!!

San Antonio has no room for two hip hop stations!!! why???

wild 102.7---- and the beat . Two hip hop stations!!! only one made it....

hot 92.9------- and the beat. two hip hop stations!!! only one made it..... i know what your going to say... the signol was weak..still

"""""" REAL COMPETITION IS A FULL STICK WITH MONEY BEHIND IT,GOOD PROGRAMING,LOTS OF MONEY,AND TIME"""""""

just because you play hip hop does not make you a contender, you have to do other things right!!!!!

If a new station pops up and picks the weakness of the beat......who knows...its all a matter of time to see what happens....

""""""""""IF THEY TOOK DOWN THE MIGHTY KTFM,,,SOMEONE CAN TAKE THEM DOWN"""""""""""

WITH ALL THE CHANGES AND DRAMA THAT THE BEAT IS GOING THREW,AND STILL NUMBER ONE...THEY ARE DOING MANY TINGS RIGHT AND YOU HAVE TO SEE THAT....

I KNOW WHATA REAL HIP HOP STATION IS SUPPOSED TO SOUND LIKE.THE BEAT IS TOP 40 CROSS OVER SATION NOT A REAL HIP HOP STATION!!!!!!!!
THAT WORKS IN THIS MARKET!!!!!!!!
THE QUESTION IS ..... WILL SAN ANTONIO ACCEPT A REAL HIP HOP STATION OR WILL IT ONLY LOVE THE BEAT?????

Hey, since you have friends that work at The Beat. Maybe you can confirm if this rumor is true. Let me reiterate- it's a RUMOR not a fact!!!

Rumor is, The Beat plans on making some changes to it's format come Oct or Nov. Now, I can't see any type of adjustment, tweaking or any type of changes unless they're having trouble selling the station to advertisers.

As for your topic. Another Hip Hop would probably do well with ratings. However, selling the station might be a problem. A format similar to Mega 101 in Houston or Laredo's Hot 106.1 could probably sell better and still make a dent to the might Beat. I only say this because those stations are focus on the Hispanic community. Not saying that The Beat isn't but the music at the other two stations are truely geared to the Latinos.

Something like Mega in Houston might work, a hurban format.

first, Wild 102.7 was not a hip hop station, the format was more of a top 40 lean, around the time where hip hop was dominating top 40 in favor of boy bands and crappy "alternative" bands. Number two, there is and was no such thing as Hot 92.9, that station is Estero Latino and before that it was La Romantica, and before that it was Star 93, and before that it was Power 93. None of these stations played hip hop. You must have been talking about Hot 92.5. I liked that staion over the beat, and I dont' really like a lot of hip hop, especially the stuff out today, but it was on a crappy signal. I don't like the music programming on the beat becasue it's pretty similar to Mix and z (minus the nickleback) as it's the same 10 stupid songs.

As for brigning something in like Mega 101, we tried the hurban format with La Kalle, but that was gone. Plus Mega 101 plays more than reaggeton. They play other types of hispanic non-folk/traditonal dance music as well as hip hop. What would be kinda of cool if we crossed the border and check out what stations in Mexico are doing, playing.

I think something like Hot Z 95 down in Courpus will work really well here.

I was down in Corpus a few weeks back. They sounded great. Z95 is a just a hip hop station with with dance music thrown in on the weekend mixshows.

As I stated, Mega 101 focuses on Hispanics. Another Hip Hop station is not needed in S.A. As for La Kalle, Univision figured it would gain more money with Recuerdo than La Kalle. La Kalle showed postive numbers during the first 3 months it was on.

Well my contacts at the beat say that no changes are in effect but that can all change within a couple of months. I personally think they could be adding some reaggeton to their playlist. As far as BMP. My friends had a meeting when they aquired jack & ktsa. The word is that no changes will happen, they like both formats. But people who have worked in radio know better than that. I expect changes to happen by next year. Right now I do know that they are building new studios or planning too, to accomodate jack & ktsa which I thought was a dumb move. If BMP is smart they will probably revamp and add studios to the old jack and ktsa facilities since the land will eventually be owned by them. Then they will no longer have to rent space like they do now. Don't be surprised if they decide to have a hurban format. Even though alot of listeners like dance formats, it will not work in SA. Sa needs to have a mixture of music in their format. That is why a true CHR format worked for so long. We will no longer have a station like the old KTFM. Always immitated but never duplicated. Peace

i may be wrong but doesnt old waterman still own the land and CBS rented it?

Yeah waterman still owns the land. The employees were trying to convince him to buy back the stations, but it didn't work he wants nothing to do with radio anymore. CBS was in the process of buying the land. So in do time BMP will purchase it.

I agree about the dance/hiphop, I still stand by my word, I think a station like KZFM "Hot Z95" in Corpus will work well in San antonio, Hot Z has been around since 1975.
