KBBT-FM on top
From radio that pleases with hip-hop and rap to a racy host who lampoons everything on the map, two Univision-owned stations are hitting the audience gong in San Antonio.
According to Arbitron's spring ratings (April, May and June), KBBT-FM, known as "The Beat," beat other dial offerings by a substantial margin in several categories. KROM-FM, with its blend of Spanish favorites from the '70s, '80s and '90s, also scored big. Its topical and amusing morning show in particular, starring the infamous Raul Brindis, is a success, nabbing the top spot with listeners advertisers love — people ages 25 to 54. A Univision radio spokesman tells me that the hot topic of immigration — and Brindis' take on it — may have attracted even more interest.
Also drawing lots of ears here is country music. The most popular station is KAJA, particularly with listeners 25 to 54. Its comical "Two Guys in the Morning" show — starring Randy Carroll and Clayton Allen — also is a big favorite here.
It's not surprising to see WOAI No. 1 in the talk realm. After all, it is the local Spurs station, and the spring book encompassed the heated playoffs.
But it's KBBT-FM, which features everyone from Ashanti to Three 6 Mafia, that was the biggest winner. Part of the reason is there's little competition for lovers of the R&B and rap sound here.
"The Beat" grabbed the brass ring in what's known as "the beauty contest" (listeners 12 and older, Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight) and also finished first among listeners between 18 and 34. Its morning show, "The Morning Mess" with Xavier Garcia, was a favorite, too.
