the beat phrase that pays?

is this 1985? or is it really 2008 and the beat is doing a promotion that would be cool in 1985 called 'the phrase that pays?' that new pd sure has good original ideas!

1985 was 23 years ago now. Nobody under 25 remembers when "the phrase that pays" was common on the airwaves. 25-34s probably view it with affection as a relic from their youth.

That's also how cover versions of songs get made. ;)

too funny....

heres the phrase that pays

97.7 the beat, #1 for hip hop and r&b

ur missing my point. 'phrase that pays' is LAME! this new pd is in way over his head. he might be good for alba-kwer-key. but this is sa baby.

No, I got your point. You're missing my point about why it might work. Then again, Gen Y is different from Gen X, so it might not work. The audience will decide in the long run. Just beware of making creative choices based on the opinion of a focus group of one. ;)

daypart has a good point. also you have to realize that homeos board oping, van driving, wishing he was on air so I'm gonna hate on everyone attitude dont really matter to the real radio people in this market.

who cares if you think it is lame or not? maybe it is maybe it isnt. what matters is billing the station and numbers remember? oh wait you arent on air so you wouldnt know that. my mistake.

Posted by: gradio-Was that really the phrase that pays or were you joking? (97.7 The Beat)

The times I've heard The Beat, they make no reference to the simulcast on 97.7. My guess is that the simulcast will eventually end.

u got me wrong. im not van driving or board oping. i work drive thru at mcdonalds. and while da beat is in my headsets the phrase that pays sounds lame. if u cant come up with sumthin better than phrase that pays u don't belong on da beat in san antonio. this pd is losing it.

daypart with some hard work and dedication u can work mcdonalds drive thru too.

To do that, I'd have to give up my career at Burger King. I'd hate to abandon the King, since I have worked my way up to Fryer Boss there and accumulated nearly enough seniority to take a vacation day. :D

next thing u know the beats morning show will think that doing prank phone calls and parody songs is good. oh wait. too late. thats lame too.

couple of points...

1985? Yes it was twentysomething years ago, daypart is exactly right, most 18-24 yr olds don't remember it, so its new and catchy to them, and I'm pretty sure that 50% or more of The Beat's target.

ok... I see both sides here. Homeo... yes it is an old school, not very creative promotion. But honestly, if it works... it works regardless of what you think of it. I was pretty sure that radio was about THE LISTENERS, not about impressing other radio geeks.

Wasn't Homie in market #7 (Houston) before? To me, that doesn't really rank as a small time PD.

Sometimes all it takes to connect with the listeners is simplicity. And the "phrase that pays" has been used for so many years because it's simple and it WORKED! (In a diary world) In a PPM world that will all change though because its not about recollection.

Just my two cents

this is what is wrong with radio. guys copy things done in other markets and dumb people think that it works just simply because it has been done before. phrase that pays is cheesy and does not sound cool to any 18-24 yr olds but nice try.

fact is this pd is not ready for a station like da beat. even his airstaff is laffing at him when they arent around him.

let me repeat your order. big mac meal. orange drink. a pie and 17 ice cream cones. right?
