No surprise that the Beat is doing a Megamix, but so is Mega in Austin. Nice a couple of stations are planning their programming for a party weekend.

It's coo that Mega is mixing but with little to know solid comment from Emmis, Mega will go no where.

Back to SA- A little surprised KTFM didn't start mixing at noon today but my understanding is Landis doesn't care for mixshow. Whether that's true or not, who knows. KTFM mixes @ 5pm and @ 11pm on Friday's and then again on Saturday nights from 7 pm til 2 am.

Btw, the largest New Year's Party in Tejas, is held in SA. Over 250,000+ will be in downtown SA. The party begins @ 6 pm and ends at 12:30.

I beg to differ, at least they are doing something for New Years instead of regular format and Mega is going to be around for awhile.

My point is, Emmis hasn't made any type of commitment to Mega other than having it on HD. The chances of this exploding or becoming something big "locally" is not going to happen.

Mega is a great station but it's primarily another online station/HD station.

It works just fine for me plus there is Hypersonic Radio not only on 101X on Saturday nights but they also have a internet station that is 24/7 which is more underground than Mega and they have all sorts of specialty shows like Air Up there with Tritonal with the hottest Trance to Chillout and everything in between. Having those two locally is a really good thing and has made a difference. we have a great EDM scene in Austin and they compliment each other. Looking forward to another great year of Dance/Electronica and great EDM events in 2012... ;D

Buy don't you want to see a measureable local audience for this format someday? Right now the audience is somewhere between zero and too low to measure. It can't exist much longer as a commercial venture without an audience to sell.

On a side note, is KAJA, KBBT, KCYY, KONO all in low power? I am having a hard time pulling them in.

Fred, the problem with the radio industry is they don't target the audience. Austin has a large population that likes dance but they generally know what they like to listen to and either listen to podcasts with their specific likes or they listen to internet streams or HD stations like Mega. If they are into the music they know where to listen to it and also by word of mouth by others who are in the scene. We would not have such large attendances to Electronic/Dance shows here if nobody was listening to Dance. People like Jason Jenkins and Toddy B who are well known in Austin and who are involved with Hypersonic Radio do a lot with promoting the local scene and it shows weekly at some of the hottest clubs in Austin that are packed with people and it is nothing but Dance music. Austin gets big named DJs pretty much on a weekly basis which says a lot about a market. They would not play in Austin if they were not going to make money and many of these DJs come again and again. Fact is the Dance/Electronica scene has been able to cope just fine without support from the radio industry. Yes it would be nice to have more dance on the radio and that goes for most areas of the United States but we are holding our own with what we have.

Oh and Austin's scene shows no signs of slowing down in fact 2012 is already looking like an even bigger year for EDM than 2011 with more events and DJs from around the world that have never been to Austin or Texas for that matter that will be coming.

Well some of the events this past year brought in thousands. Some of the larger EDM festivals bring in between 20,000 to 40,000. Of course these events also bring in people from other areas but majority of people live in the Austin area. We are talking about a good amount of people and demographic wise we are also talking about a good size 21 and up population not just younger teens. I don't think the scene takes a census of how many people like dance music so if you want numbers, I suggest going to some of these events and shows and actually experience them and talking with the people. Either way the scene is very active and fact is Austin would not see these events at all if there was no market for them.

40,000 sounds high. We're talking Erwin Center size crowds night after night. Even if all 40,000 fans were local, the cume audience would only rank 27th in the Austin market. That doesn't give you much of a story to take to advertisers. And you're talking about having this size audience only during festivals. The audience shrinks considerably when the out-of-towners leave. I'm glad you're happy with the status quo because-- looking at the numbers-- EDM is lucky to get the air time it has now.

I agree with you on that, it is lucky to get what it has on the radio. It is the same across the country but with Dance now entering mainstream top 40, we are starting to see a change and I feel confident that 2012 will continue to see the rise of Dance/Electronica into mainstream pop as we saw in 2011, and with that we are seeing more people who were not into Dance before who are now which is a good thing.

No, we don't want to see a measureable local audience. Once we do, it will cease to be commercial-free. Emmis will continue to air programming on HD2 because it gives BOB exposure, especially on the internet. Emmis doesn't need to make money off of Mega, and the proof of that is it hasn't made anything off of it's HD2 station, whether it was Mega or Smooth Jazz since it's inception in 2006, yet it continues to get support from Emmis.

You have a point Pete, Mega has been on for about 2 years now and Emmis has left Mega as is without commercials which while not generating money, it gives us a commercial free station. I can't stand listening to radio stations with commercials which is one reason why I don't listen to FM other than Hypersonic Radio on 101X Saturday nights if I am not downtown. Even then I can listen to Hypersonic radio another time because they replay the show in their internet station as well as podcast it. Emmis could have easily done away with it a long time ago but they have not. They brought Mega back with local programming, not just another branded dance station or a syndicated stream. They knew there was a niche market that loved the original Mega 93.3. wether or not they show any ratings, Mega has listeners and thats fine enough for me.

This sounds more like a project to one or more dj's working at Austin-Emmis.

Besides, if the corporate people @ Emmis really believed in the format, Mega at the very least would have been on a translator many moons ago. On the bright side, the Dance music popularity is growing in the states. It's just a matter of time until a full blown station is launched in the U.S.

The station is still hear after some peoples assumptions that it would be gone long ago. Not naming names but you know who you are.... ::)

Fact is its still here and as far as I have heard it is not going anywhere any time soon. It does not hurt the market to have it. Plus its locally programmed, not a syndicated stream.

That has been tried and done, in LA and Houston in the 90s. Houston's now defunct KHYS had a 16th rank in the Arbs in 1997.
