The Beat-SA & Lady Gaga

Anyone know why The Beat was giving away tickets to an artist that's not even on their playlist? Granted, she is extremely popular but yet not popular enough to get airplay on their station.....Just odd.

This morning Xavier stated many Hip Hop stations were giving away tickets to Lady Gaga. Hmmmm, I wonder if The Box in Houston is also giving away tickets?

A hot ticket is a hot ticket. And they know they share listeners with other stations/formats.

Now I can agree with that. However... if Lionel Richie was coming in concert, an artist they do not play it still seems kind of off to promote the event. (Just an example)

When I lived in El Paso Power 102 Home of Hip Hop & RnB would play dance music. It never sat well with me since their moniker was Home/#1 for Hip Hop and RnB. Look at The Beat 105.3 in Austin. They claim they are Hip Hop yet they have Seacrest on their station. When I did mornings in Corpus the Hip Hop station I worked for had 2 minute promos for Tejano concerts coming to town. It sounded horrible.

In KBBT's case, it is not as extreme as the examples I just mentioned. I feel they can get away with it. Bottom line its just a little strange.

Reason the beat is probably giving tickets away is to make up for the cancellation of the Kanye tour which was suppose to happen with Lady Gaga last year and one of their artists also has a sample of lady gaga on their track.

I disagree but that's your opinion. But I somewhat agree to what Fredcantu posted.

On the flip side, 24 hrs Hip Hop/R&B stations have become watered down especially in markets such as this one where as the Black population is less than 10%. Take a look of how many Hip Hop stations have flipped to Rhythmic Top 40, Top 40 or to a completely different format. A prime example of this happened last week in Miami with 103.5 The Beat flipped to Spanish AC.

PPM's in SA will be a bit interesting with KTFM, Mix and The Beat.

Tejano and Hip Hop together is not as far fetched as you would think. I recall back in the early 80s a few stations including 105.5 in Mission/Edinburg and 1560 is Austin played a format that mixed Tejano, Country and Top 40. Back then there were also night clubs that played that same broad music mix. It was fun while it lasted.

Can't remember but back in the 90's Corpus I think it was 105.5 played Spanish and Top 40 English mix.

I could not agree more. It seems as if a CHR Rhy station can get away with playing a wider variety of music vs a true urban station. If a true urban station played pop-ish kind of music they would be doomed. Look at what happened to Power.

I am also eagerly waiting to see if Mix fans will stick around or jump ship to KTFM.

Yeah but you also have to realize Fred in 2010, things are much different. Times are much different and so is the music.

I remember a few years back when the Jammin' Oldies version of KTFM sponsored a concert here that was headlined by Devo. That was odd, too.

And now, Jammin is no more. 94.1 Jammin Oldies was HOT for awhile but that quickly faded.

My point to all this is that The Beat wouldn't be giving tickets away two years ago to someone like Lady Gaga. Times have certainly changed......
