The best station ever

If I were able to listen as an infant I would agree about 96 1/2 KAUM. They played Rod Stewart's 45 version of Do you think I'm Sexy. I listened to a couple of KAUM airchecks off the web.

KAUM was one of the few FM stations that would play full albums late at night - and I was there with my reel-to-reel to record them!

I had the honor to work at KULF in the 70s with studios at the top of the Central Bank building, which is still there but boarded up and for sale. I would love to go up there and see what's left. But my first favorite station in Houston was KRLY, the first FM station here to jump in with rock and roll and go head to head with KILT and KNUZ. I can still remember their jingle, Kaaa-R-Elll-Yyyy.

Central Bank! Why was I thinking Century??? Mr. McClurg, the report from within the walls of Central Bank are that there are still furnishings such as leather couches, desks, etc. still up there. I haven't personally seen it....not one to go breaking and entering around town....but have seen the pics online that show a very dreary, dusty, dated, and moldy interior. Hard to believe that was once a state of the art facility. It was a very nice art deco building that has been left to rot for over the last 20 years. You can rank it right up there with the Savoy as the two top eyesores in downtown.

I worked at KULF when it was on the first floor of the Central Bank building and helped wire the new studios which was the Cork Club on the top floor. You're right, they were state of the art.

When I worked all nights, Hal Eisner was my newsman. He has been doing TV news in LA for years.

I also stayed at the Savoy when I first got to Houston.

Sad to hear they are eyesores now. If those walls could talk!!

Wow. Those photos brought back memories. I clearly recognize the secretary's desk and the little KULF desk sign. I had completely forgotten about the big wall 3-D sign. ANd I remember Hal Eisner. In fact, I'm the one who replaced him, but we did overlap awhile. Years ago I heard him in a CNN video doing a story.

I wish I was rich. I would buy that building and restore it. Of course, I would have to be really, really rich. But it is a solid building.

WOW! Thanks for posting the link to the pic's of the Central Bank Building. Brings back alot of good thoughts. The picture of the lobby with the staircase, with a conference room to the left, remins me when I used to slide down the banister, until GM Bill Bosse told me to stop. This after I slid into Libby Klienpeter. Not entirely an accident. If you saw Libby, you would now why!

Those pics were better then the ones I was looking for. These are amazing. Wish I could have seen it in its day.

This may fall a little of off the subject of this discussion group, but can someone tell me what is going on with that building. I have been in Houston for about 17 years and that has been nothing in that rusty building for years. Why don't they tear the thing down??

Asbestos? Probably a good topic to bring up over at Swamplot.

Old Chicago,

You're right of course. But I spent some of the best years of my life in that building. Would hate to see it torn down. It was a great location for a radio station. I guess all things have to come to an end.

Because the owner wants to let it sit until the second coming. Savoy sits in the same limbo.

KZFX signed on to serve Houston (moved in from Lake Jackson) in October of 86

Actually it was a gospel station, the original KGOL when it moved studios and offices to S. Kirby from Lake Jackson as a rimshot. It was owned at that time by John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. KZFX came after KGOL was sold again.

Not trying to get too far away from the original thread, but what is the street address of the Central Bank bldg.? I always thought the Cork Club was at the Shamrock and went away years ago when they tore the hotel down...keep in mind I've never been described as the sharpest knife in the drawer. Sure enjoy all the posts.

In 1989 the COL was still Lake Jackson as Z-107.5 KZFX, I remember hearing Baker Street by Gerry Raffety listening to it in my Granddad's garage with his B&W TV AM/FM radio tuned to that station well the top of the hour id was KZFX Lake Jackson, Houston Z 107. Wasn't KGOL on 107.3 first as a rimshot? Before KGOL wasn't the calls KJOJ 107.3?

Yes willdav, What is now 107.5 originally was @ 107.3. It moved, IIRC, when KWIC-Beaumont moved from 107.7 to 107.9 where KQQK now resides. 107.3 was never KJOJ. 106.9 was, but not 107.3. Original calls for the station were KLJT-Lake Jackson.
