"The Big 68" returns to WRKO this Saturday night!!!

There certainly are options outside of terrestrial radio to hear "Oldies" .... However in Boston proper, on terrestrial radio, the oldest you get is the 1970s from WROR. This show captures the hits from the late 50's through the 60s. It features records that were heard on AM radio originally and are therefore a fit. Airing songs from the 70s/80s on an AM signal would not make sense. There is already an option for that in the market on the FM dial.

Right you are, radioface!!! Except that I never really considered 'ROR an "oldies" station in the same sense I did the pre-2008 WODS. ('ROR is a 'ZLX wannabe.) Just about every station that considers itself an "oldies" station these days dips into the 80s (bless their little pea-pickin' hearts). That includes North Shore 104.9 and even, sad to say, Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel. One station that hasn't yielded to this trend thus far is KRTH-HD2 from CBS LA.

The opportunity for 'RKO to "recreate" their memorable sound from the late 60s, early 70s is there, alright, and there's probably enough of us geezers who'd welcome it. After all, did I not mention elsewhere that AM was what we listened to back in the 60s, when FM was pretty much the domain of classical and "beautiful" music?

If anyone knows, though: the audio seems a bit distorted to me on my AM radio. Yes, I know it's AM radio (restricted frequency response and all that) but it need not sound so boomy and compressed. Right now I'm listening online via iTunes, and I'm using Treble Boost on my equalizer. Does anyone know more about the technical details of this broadcast?

Also, is there anything legal that prevents an outright recreation of the Drake-Cheanult image of 'RKO, when the station was at its peak?

And, Jeff, if you read this: I wish you continued success, buddy! If you're schedule permits, consider adding Sunday evenings, too.

Bare Bones? The station has a dedicated PD, dedicated Sales Manager, 5 dedicated Account Executives, 2 full time producers, 3 full time air-talents, and a number of part timers that all work exclusively for WRKO. A lot has changed internally since June.

1. Who are the 3 fulltime air-talents.
2. What is your definition of fulltime?
3. I know Crazy Kuhner is employed by Entercom. You know for a fact that Kerrigan and Meterparel are Entercom employees? What about their producer
4. The Young Lady that produces Crazy Kuhners show works 30 hours a week.
5.. Who are all these part timers and what are they doing exclusively for WRKO? Not many of them are board operators otherwise I wouldn;t hear all that dead air at the top of hour between 7p and 6a
6. Bill Smith does production for the other stations so you can't be referring to him.
7. I am not going to spend a lot of time on the fact that you consider ct that a major market 50K station owned by a large national broadcasting company employes a PD and Sales Manager worthy of note.
8. 5 sales people is a small staff.
9. The only change I have seen since June other than Crazy Kuhners demotion is the significant drop in WRKO's overall cume.

Whether they have 5 full time employees or 55, I give them credit for trying something different.

So many on this board criticize and wail about the state of radio. Here's a great example of a station with a fresh idea and they still get chastised. To my ear WRKO sounds better today than it did a year ago. Is it 1976? No. Is it 1996? No. Is it 2006? No. But give them credit for being better than 2014...or just stay bitter.

If you reread my first post on this topic I think you will find that I said I was happy anytime a live show hosted by local talent replaced infomercials or national shows. I was surprised to read that host of the show is an Entercom employee and not an independent producer who is purchasing the time. I do think they deserve credit for being creative . I watch a few of the 60's era game shows on Buzzer. I love the fact that they often run the original commercials as well as the show itself. I would love to hear some of the old Jordans furniture spots and John Masters newscasts etc

YOU COULDN'T BE MORE RIGHT!!!

Bunch of Curmudgeons...

What happened to the oldies on The Big 68? Jeff Kuhner rerun is on.

Been playing New Hit Music, Fewer Commercials, since 10PM, on 103.3 AMP RADIO! It;s been a "Workout"! "Sorry" but it's time to clean up my mess, and head out! I'm heading down to Providence, RI for the day (I sense Italian food on the hill, in my future). I'm NOT on WRKO tonight because of the Republican Debate (those guys are ALWAYS arguing about something), but I'll be back there NEXT Saturday night! Be safe and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

1. Kuhner / Kim & Meter (Howie & Barry may not be Entercom employees but WRKO is their flagship making the station local 6a-7p)
2. A full time employee is an employee that is eligible for company paid benefits.
3. Kim, Meter, and their producer are all employees of Entercom Boston
4. That "Young lady" works around the clock. She is single handedly responsible for the fact you hear Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and other major political candidates on the show on a regular basis.
5. They are board ops and assistant producers. Touche' on the 7p - 5a.
6.Bill Smith does production for WRKO & WEEI
7. Agreed, however there are some pretty major stations in this market that do not have a dedicated PD or sales staff.
8. Also agreed, however again, I know some clusters that have a couple more, but they sell the entire cluster.
9. WRKOs overall cume has increased by 13,000 since June. Jeff Kuhner's cume is 5,000 over what Rush was cuming 25-54
