The Big Book of Music

When I used to frequent record stores in my youth, I always remember a big book at the check-out counter, that had listings of everything still in print, grouped by musical genre, with the artists listed alphabetically. I guess I'm looking for something similar to the Schwann catalog, but for pop and rock. Is there any publication such as this, which is for sale to the general public? Ideally, I could purchase it through my local book store or off the internet. Thanks.
 
At the music shop where my son works, they use www.amazon.com , but there are others as well. I'll check, if there's somthing better, I'll post.
