The BIG GUN? WGUN 1010? Whaaat?

Man I heard some weird music today there..What's the scoop on this 50kw signal? Religous promos..Doo-Wop promos, and something called Natasha' Dreammaker Nightime Musical Mistress..etc (or something like that) The production is interesting..sounds like a younger guy doing it.."The BIG GUN! Your music and entertainment sensation station"..it's the "station you've asked for" with "music from the 30's 40's and 50's..and entertaining talk programes"

THE THIRTIES? Woah!

I am told that the dog show on Saturday is some of the...most.....ummm...."fascinating" radio you will ever hear. I wish I knew the time.

This station is very difficult to listen to. I cannot stand that gun sound--It is supposed to be a relaxing staion, musically, but then they have the bible fire and brimstone crap...It is just a big mess.

Sounds like the most interesting thing that has happened to Atlanta raio in many years. Don`t knock it!!! This very dull and boring radio market of Atlanta needs something bod and of the wall lie this!!!!

What? Something bod and of the wall lie this??? Is that a new format?
The statement about the Big Gun is the funniest, how can you play standards one min, then have someone telling you , " Your going to hell".. then another set of standards, then Rev Roloff, whos been dead since 1988, singing.. GEEZ.. Its the worst WAD of radio mess anyone has ever heard.. THe Morning show is a bright spot, DOO WOP show is ridonkulous!!! Its a misfit station.. PLEASE if you are gonna run standards, THEN RUN STANDARDS.....But not Andy Williams, then " your gonna burn in hell", then heres how to buy a house...

Put yourself in the position of being the owner of WGUN. She likes the nostalgia and wants to grow it. But the station has contracts with the brokered people and can't just break them. The other thing is, the station gets guaranteed money for the brokered shows. What if the owner found a way to break contracts and then wasn't able to make money on the nostalgia programming? She'd be ready to put that Big Gun to her head. I think if she sees the music programming is really starting to bring in money, she'll expand it as contracts run out.

In any case, WGUN will remain the NRA's favorite station. By the way, WGUN has called itself The Big Gun for years and years.

So yesterday..one of the fire and brimstone guys was speaking about how the "end of days was approaching as evidenced by the need for people to arm themselves with GUNS!" The processing is set to fast recovery, and the tape source was SO noisy that it picked up the tape noise as loud as the program material..making for real hard to understand audio.

Then they played the BIG GUN sound effect and played "I Believe in Wishing Wells" by Frank Sinatra followed by "Speedo" wow..what a blender of a station!

Also the production is getting edgy..some of it had so much slapback echo that you couldn't make out any of the words..Who is that guy doing production?

The Station itself could actually do so much better. It's such a shame that it could be a full time standards station, BUT we have to program garbage in between all of the great elements that its a real hard thing to even pay attention to.
I mean for example.. WHO has Standards in the AM, then Religious Reflective Segments for most of the midday, then a half hour of JAZZ, Then into a DOO WOP program? Really REALLY REALLY weird programming. Its a sad shamble of what could be a great AM station in Atlanta. They need new imaging, rid of the damn gun blasts, because that in itself causes issues with whats being programmed. Mornings are nice to hear, Great music, and fun banter, but then it all goes down hill after 9 am in the morning.. Sad state of affairs, WGUN could be such a great station.

So, whaddya want on 1010? A focus-grouped, over-homogenized, clear-channeled, cookie-cutter station or one that is trying to fill all sorts of niches, whatever they may be? This town has room for both types, and you really can't fault them for trying - even if they do shoot blanks.

(BTW, the gun effect IS overused. Reminds me of the old WBAM in Montgomery. ;D)

Their website is rather interesting... http://www.wgunradio.com/

Suffice it to say, it is worth looking at... very strange.. when you spend $40 an hour to lease time with them, you get "worldwide coverage" with their internet stream. It is a STEEL of a deal...

Looks like their stream is down, regrettably...

Man, a lot of different takes....here's mine, taking a shotGUN approach (hey, I'll be here all week...don't forget to tip your server...is this thing on?)

--While I am sure there is a niche, where is the money in programming music that caters to what they used to call the Cadillac demo, that is, 65 to dead? Their target audience with standards as far back as the 30s makes MOYL look like CHR.

--Do the owners of WGUN feel compelled to run religious programming due to their religious beliefs? Or is it strictly a money-making deal? I have no beef with religion but "preachin' and teachin'" doesn't mix that well with, well, much else besides gospel or CCM.

--The ATL market is littered with stations with great day power and night power that breaks the lightbulb rule (i.e., the red light on your stick draws more electricity than your transmitter). None of them are what I would call successful; the only possible exception I can see is WNIV, a "preachin' and teachin'" station with all of Salem's syndicated programming, and it simuls with WLTA which is 1000W 24/7 (IIRC), and it only musters about a half-point share. Why should WGUN do better than, say, WCFO (which has Imus and Dr. Laura!)?

--In a way, WGUN comes across as the conservative version of WRFG with its, shall I say, eclectic programming. Part of having an eclectic mix entails arranging your programming sked so that it doesn't clash. And while brokered programming pays the bills, there's a reason why people have to pay to air it. The brokered programming needs to be set aside to times where it doesn't clash or drive away prospective listeners, as well.

I hope you like the Doo Wop Show bro, I love doing it and it's a lot of fun! If you have a hit from the 50's you want to hear sometime call in at 770-491-1010 and I will try and play it for you!

Milton 77 is correct. On WGUN’s web site I saw $40 for a prerecorded hour. This is a deal! I remember back in the late 1970’s while in college I was working a 3KW fm tied to a 250 watt am in Cookeville TN. That Station got $40 half hour cash from a Sunday afternoon Preacher. I remember writing the recite and pulling the money in the box. A real success story in time brokered stations is WFLI Lookout Mt. (Chattanooga). In just a few years after they grounded The Jet WFIL, they generated enough cash for a major station upgrade with Southern Gospel and preachers. I hope WGUN's music is a success. Every time I drive thru Chattanooga I miss The Great Jet WFLI!!

Thanks secondchoice,
I hope it's a success too and I am a little to young to remember Jet WFLI, but from the way you described it, it sounded pretty good!

BTW Sky Rider..your show IS quite fun to hear..really amazing old stuff you have found. My objection/curiousity is the complete train wrecks they play during automated hours..Your show is very good man! They would do well to standardize somewhat and either play standards or doo-wap more consistantly than the wierd mix that goes all over the place now

Thanks man, trust me that means a lot to me and like I said if you ever got any request or new songs I haven't played call them in when you got time during the show, so I can expand the library!

After listening extensively, The Gun shots are add to some of the best formatics I have ever heard.

Good work WGUN.
