The Big Story w/ Tony Miner

I've been listening to the Big Story at 6 on KIRO the last few weeks.

I think it is a great sounding, long form, local news program. In-depth news reporting on AM is almost non-existant. It's All Things Considered for a local audience.

Does anyone on this board think a show like this has a future on KIRO? I'd love to see it expanded - running on an hour long clock cycle as opposed to the 30-minute cycle of the morning news. It certainly differentiates the PM drive news product from KOMO's strict all day all night clock. How is it doing in the ratings?

I think it's a well-produced show - and the format sounds just fine the way it is. But it shouldn't be expanded. Think "Dateline" or "60 Minutes" for radio - any longer than an hour and it loses its luster.

As for the numbers - the problem is that TBS is a show in search of available listeners. Most people won't make an appointment to turn on the radio at 6pm every day.

Why did KIRO cancel their afternoon news with Val and Tony? Is the Lifestyle talk with Ron and Don selling there? How about bringing back Linda Thomas with Tony Miner afternoons, like on KOMO? It's a waste of Tony Miner's talents if he's only on for one hour. He should do an entire daypart. I'll try to listen on line....

Maybe that'll happen. I heard Linda on KIRO today. I agree news hour is generally a solid show and there's usually enough going on to justify expanding it.

And she sounds great! She's been off the air in Seattle long enough that I don't remember, her, but she's got a great voice and great delivery. I'd love KIRO to have some kind of permanent position for her.

KIRO seems to be beefing up their news staff - there is a new female reporter I've heard a couple of times on the Big Story - plus Josh Kearns is back in some kind of role ... I'm hearing him pretty often. KOMO's going to have to add another reporter to their staff to keep up with the reporting corps over at KIRO.

KOMO was blown out of the water by KIRO in their coverage of the Centralia floods - mostly, I think, because they just don't have as many bodies out there.

I too would like to hear Linda on the radio permanently. I've heard her around the dial for many years, but wasn't in Seattle when she worked fulltime. I don't know why she works parttime, but in my opinion she's better than a lot of people who have a gig. I've heard her around the dial for many years. I think she sounds best with Ichabod or Rivers. News radio formatics don't let people show their personalities.

I flipped back and forth between KOMO and KIRO this week and thought 710 beat 1000 easily. I don't think it's just a matter of KIRO having more staff because KOMO has access to the whole TV news crew. I think the people at KOMO just don't know what they're doing. KIRO was the best I've heard this week.
