The Chicago Blackhawks might not be having a very good season on the ice, but the team is staying right where they are...On the radio.
Before their game in St. Louis Wednesday night, Blackhawks Radio broadcasters John Wiedeman & Troy Murray announced on air that the team & 720 AM WGN Radio have announced a 3 year extension of the team's radio rights through the 2026-27 NHL season. Coinciding with the team's extension with the Nexstar-owned news/talk radio outlet, Wiedeman & Murray have also signed extensions of their own to continue broadcasting the games. Joe Brand, the team's pre, intermission & postgame host, will continue in his current role. WGN Radio's contract was set to expire after this NHL season.
Wiedeman & Murray have called Blackhawk games on radio since 2006-07, 2 seasons before WGN started airing the Blackhawks in 2008-09. The duo have also been behind the microphone calling all 3 of the Hawks' Stanley Cup titles in 2010, 2013 & 2015. They have also received 4 "Best Play By Play Awards" from the Illinois Broadcasters Association.
What remains to be seen is whether the Blackhawks will extend their current TV deal with NBC Sports Chicago. The team's TV deal is set to expire at season's end, as well as the ones involving the Chicago Bulls & Chicago White Sox. Will the 3 teams stay together on the TV side? Stay tuned.
