The Bone Thrown to the Dogs

I guess those "The Bone Beat the Blimp" sweeps sound pretty silly now!

So long, Bone. You fought dirty and lost in the end.

Too bad... Years ago I worked in Portland radio at another former rocker known as Z-101 (WYNZ-FM). It was another challenged signal at the time, (3000 watts) going up against the Blimp. I heard the Bone a couple of years ago and thought that they sounded decent. Here in the Albany area, we had a rock station known as the Bone as well. It was a similar situation. A decent sounding station on two challenged signals going up against a big signal heritage rock station. It ended up eventually being sold to religious broadcasters. There was absolutely no warning either. I was listening one Friday afternoon last winter, when they simply pulled the plug in the middle of an Eric Clapton song, and on came the religion after a few seconds of dead air. Certainly the most abrupt and extreme format change that I have ever heard....

With the Boston sports fanatics here in the city, present company included, this sounds like a good move. I bet the ratings go up on these frequencies. The Bone's signals can be hard to get in Portland and unless there is compelling reason to listen, why bother. No mention of AM 870. Do they stay with ESPN?
