No doubt due to the departure of PD Gary Thompson. He was the only one there who understood the concept of "Modern Classic Rock." Have you noticed where KZPS is in the ratings? Try top 2 in Men 25-54 (#1 non ethnic IIRC) and top 5 (at least) P25-54. There are alot of ratings points up for grabs (and therefore is a LOT of money to be made) by knocking KZPS off their pedastal (or even just by making their pedastal a little smaller).
Look at where KDGE and the Eagle are in the ratings. Where are they? Well, they're not #2 Men25-54. Why should KDBN fight KDGE or KEGL for pieces of a smaller pie, rather than grab what they can of KZPS's MUCH bigger pie?
And I do believe if you check KDBN's ratings, they havent picked up any 25-34's, so therefore they really don't have to worry about them going back to their CD's or to Jack, their foray into more modern music has failed.
Just like most major attempts at 'modern classic rock" have failed. Of course that won't stop you from promoting your idea, but can you point to more than a couple of isolated examples of what you think is a successful 'modern' classic rock station?
Most of them fail because they can't get a popular cross section of music that enough people like to support a station.
The problem comes in that rock really split in the 80's into distinct subcategories. First it was the graying stadium rockers (the later years of Styx.Cheap trick, etc) the post-punk indie/pop rock rise (Think REM, U2, tears for fears, etc, then the hair metal (Posion, Crue, etc) then the grunge, followed by the Triple A type artists in the early 90's (when that was much bigger than today) that's not a problem itself, the problem is that the old fart rockers don't like the hair metal or the grunge, the grunge fans hate the hair metal, all the rock fans hate the AAA and soft pop stuff, the U2 fans think the metalheads are a bunch of drop outs with loser music taste, etc...
It's why Jack has (last time I looked) high cume and low tsl. A lot of people like SOME of what they play, few people like ALL of what they play.
Its the same reason that all-80s stations have flamed out quickly. there a nice novelty, they'll get you a spike in the ratings short term, but there's not enough music that enough people like to listen to over and over and over to sustain ratings over an extended period.
