The Bone's "Three-Fer-Thursday"

M

I heard it this morning. The bone was promoting their new "three fer Thursday." I am only guessing the name for that came from our fellow radio-info.com member, "Three-Fer-Thursday" who has always been pro WBLM and anti Bone. Not to knock this user, as he's always entitled to his opinions, likes, dislikes, and beliefs as the rest of us are, but as I heard it, I couldn't help but to laugh....a lot. It got my attention for sure.

BTW, does the bone have a new morning show yet? I haven't been able to listen during the mornings. If they do, is it worth listening to?

Be on the lookout for "One for Wednesday' where the lucky listener gets treated to one song in a row from their favorite station (whatever that might be )

"Three-Fer-Thursday"...most likely explanation

You have already figured it out, I am sure. They are simply one upping Two For Tuesday, which I believe BLM, does these days. Three For Thursday, is usually used on competitors, of stations that program Two For Tuesday, and it isn't a new idea. We used it at a Classic Rock station, that I worked at, in the late 80s, in another market. As a matter of fact, we used Two For Tuesday, on 100.9-WYNZ, 25 years ago, when it was a Classic Rock/AOR station, long before BLM picked it up...

Somehow I doubt will ever hear the complete versions of "ALICE'S RESTAURANT", "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" or the original "LAYLA" on 'one for Wednesday?'

Down here in Columbus, GA we have WVRK 102.9 "Rock 103", which is AOR. They've been doing Three-fer-Thursdays as long as I can remember, for well over 10 years now. They've gone through several owners...locally owned, and eventually to Cumulus then to Clear Channel...and the format has never changed. It's one of only a couple of stations in town whose jocks have been there for over a decade! And yes, they're local!

And for what it's worth, there's NO other station within listenable range that has ever done "Two-fer-Tuesdays".

Personally, I always liked the thought of "One for Monday" since it seemed to flow a little better for me. Used to do that way back in college. Didn't know I was so cutting-edge then. ;)

and, honestly, argy... You won't hear the first one for sure. Some folks find it a bit much to sit through a broadcast of Alice once a year at Thanksgiving, let alone once a week.

I'm sure you're correct about "ALICE'S RESTAURANT" along with some of the other tunes I forgot to bring up? [I'm thinking of all those terrific trax by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, and several other 70s groups that ran longer than 3.5 minutes!]. Thank goodness for CDS (as well as cassettes and lps)!

While I love a good album track....I can't say I miss any of the bad commercials or "stutter image liners" that some of the local stations are crammed with right now!

There's definitely a difference between "selling your station's call letters" and SCREAMING THEM!

You betcha. Imagine someone daring to roll the entire "Karn Evil 9" (not just part 2). It would probably be someone on their way out, anyway.

I'm thinking that might be a symptom of clusters these days... Having the CHR Production Director making the classic rock imaging. Stutters make me nuts in CR.

"cuz three minute songs are all we play...
every night, every day.
no more Taxi or MacArthur Park.
Benatar tunes have been shot in the dark.
And remember Ode To Billie Jo?
The bossman said - "it had to go."
cuz we're living here in Edittown."

from "EditTown" (with apologies to Billy Joel)
circa 1983, when 3:43 and a fade was considered an eternity
in A/C - CHR radio.
(still a great "argy" production piece! if i had a server spot,
i'd upload the thing. just brilliant stuff, like we used to get
to do on radio.)

I actually heard BLM play all of "Karn Evil 9" a couple of summers ago as part of their "70's at 7." That of course was pre-Frank.

Chuck...

Looks like you and I are "due for an audio exchange" one of these days? [I still have the EDIT-TOWN Master somewhere in my tape archives]. Would you happen to know if CP ever heard "EDIT TOWN" after we put together?

While a few of our Northern New England contributors have accused me of "longing for the good ole' days of radio"----I guess I'd rather see a few radio stations take their 'creativity' (in commercials and promos) to a higher level than they're currently at? There are definitely more options than screaming and yelling at a listener...or pretending to be "cool or hip" when the (music or talk) format of a radio station...ISN'T!

And as we both know (from working together at a couple of Maine radio stations during the 80s and 90s), the 'creative production concept' isn't impossible. Perhaps it's just a little 'dormant' right now? Listeners who support the radio station and spend money with its advertisers...really deserve A LOT MORE than what they're getting!

Thanks for the compliment about "EDIT-TOWN"

STUTTER SWEEP LINERS (IN ANY FORMAT) ACTUALLY ARE MORE ANNOYING TO A LISTENER THAN ANYTHING ELSE! IF YOU'RE HAVING A TERRIBLE DAY AT WORK, HOME, OR WHILE BEING "A ROAD WARRIOR" AND YOU'RE SUDDENLY HIT WITH A V.O. GUY "STUTTERING" THE SAME PHRASE OVER AND OVER...THE AUTOMATIC REFLEX IS TO EITHER LISTEN TO A DIFFERENT STATION...OR GRAB A CD INSTEAD!

Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture

A little of the glory of, well time slips away

And leaves you with nothing mister but

Boring stories of glory days.

Well they'll pass you by glory days

In the wink of a young girls eyes

Glory days. Glory daaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaays.

Heh... Then BLM suddenly had to become a radio station and compete in the 21st century. I had a professor that once told our programming class, "If you program according to one person's tastes, you'll eventually end up with one person listening...". Don't get me wrong, I'd love to hear deep cuts and stuff on the radio, but in this day of MP3 players in the car, those days are long gone. The expectation has shifted to aural comfort-food, all the time.

IMHO, internet radio is today's underground FM if you want to hear folks who love going off on paths rarely trodden.

Re: "Three-Fer-Thursday"...most likely explanation

Funny you should mention that. I broke out my Stan Freberg box set the other day and gave it a spin most of the week. Some of his ads were pretty sharp in comparison to most of what we hear/play today.

And you've just described the difference between a CREATIVE AD THAT LISTENERS WILL UNDERSTAND AND IDENTIFY WITH....as opposed to some idiot screaming: "the end of the world is this Friday---so we have to move these cars off our lot NOW!"

[I wonder if "Wally in Westbrook" is aware of how horrible his TV spots are?]

I don't know who your profesor is...but I'll bet his "radio diet" consists of MPBN and perhaps "the classical station?" With all due respects, competition isn't based on sounding like everybody else....it's a radio station, group (or syndicated programming service) that offers A BETTER ALTERNATIVE! Satellite radio ISN'T (NOR WASN'T) EXCLUSIVE to this sort of idea. But lately, the "local conglomerates" have already been programmed to NOT THINK BEYOND THE BOX! WHY? Because it's easier (and cheaper) not to!

Actually, I live in Texas and down here, it's a lot easier to do what everyone else is doing and get away with it because the biggest competition for your format (outside of Hispanic, C&W and talk...) is at least 2 hours away. Most cities resort to niche programming down here, so there's little incentive to think outside the box. I interviewed for a position at the Nassau group in Portland and during the 90ish-minute drive from the airport in Manchester (to which I got a cheaper flight than to Portland) to Portland, I was amazed that I could find no less than EIGHT classic rock stations. You guys are packed in tight up there! So I'm not surprised at all by your comments. Someone up there could stand to stick their neck out a little and dig a *little* bit deeper into the music bin. But judging from the books in Portland that I've seen over the last couple years, it doesn't look as though there's a market-wide need for it.

Here's my basic point: Industry-wide, there is definitely room for a shake-up of "the box". People bitch about Clear Channel and "McRadio", etc. and you would think that enough of them are now at a point where they can hire enough creative and marketing people to be able to sit down and come up with the next great thing for music-based broadcast radio.

Obviously, it won't be me because that was an awful run-on sentence. :\
