It seems very difficult these days to get started in radio... for instance, I am not currently enrolled in college and even if I were I'd be unable to recieve direct credit for an internship- and therefore that option is completely closed to me- I've been told repeatedly that a station can't allow me to work for free, to do any kind of task, as a legal matter, unless that college credit is recieved. What are the options for entry level engagement, particularly in the limited environment of the Winston-Salem area, for someone with strong computer and technical skills but no direct radio experience, sales, board op-ing or otherwise? Existent? :)
 
Make sure you want to get into the radio business.

I'm not trying to sway your decision -- just being
honest with you. If you think you want lots of money,
well, you may or may not find it.

You will work with some of the best and worst people
in the world. Radio allows both kinds.

It changes everyday...and after awhile, you will
understand the saying, "The more things change, the more
they stay the same"...or at least I understand it now.

I know it may not be exactly what you are looking for, but to get your foot in the door, have you tried talking to anyone at the multitude of smaller AM's around here. I know most are automated these days, but the ones that carry sports events etc. may very well be in need of board ops for minimum wage. It's been my experience that these positions are usually not advertised, so you may want to network a bit.

If you are willing to work for free, you can "volunteer" to work for one of the non-commercial radio stations in the area.
 
Easiest way, I'd say, is PT in the promotions department, helping set up for remotes and stuff. Hours will be few at first, but if you're good and you know your (BLEEP), they'll pick up. You could work this into a shot doing some board op'ing in programming. Then if your station needs air talent, you could ask to try an overnight airshift or something.
