I went to my local dunkin donuts this morning, per usual my small iced and donut. but what made it an interesting visit wasn't the food, rather, hearing our favorite 106.1 the breeezzee on their pa speakers in the ceiling.
let me explain, this dunkin since I've been going there regularly in 2013 has always had that radio stuck on b101 (back then more fm). seeing them switch to the breeze, as a radio format nerd, surprised the hell out of me. I had to ask someone there why the change, so asked if I could talk to the person in charge of the radio. I got some young shift manager, and she seemed to be in her mid 30s. I told her I'm a radio industry student, and wanted to know what made her switch the radio. she said the music just fit the store better, and that people enjoy hearing more relaxing music in the morning while they got their coffee and donuts. she said she disliked the b101 morning show and the music was too repetitive and intrusive.
I get a huge fascination out of studying the radio habits of people and stores. I had to leave and didn't have enough time to ask her if she actually received complaints from customers about b101, and vice versa if she got compliments for the breeze. You should keep an ear out when you go to any store around that plays music, and see if they're playing the breeze. next to alt rock, this modern take on easy listening is easily the next nation-wide format craze. I have to praise the PDs at the breeze, that while its not my favorite station, even I, who considers Pixies my favorite band, like some of what they play. they must be happy as a clam knowing so many people are making that switch; to take listeners away from such a massively well known station like b101, is a feat no one thought could be done. 106.1 as a frequency is still probably mostly known for smooth jazz WJJZ, but that was years ago. to get people to move all the way up there is really amazing.
