The Brew and WEXT

Here is the sign on of "97.3 The Brew" in Milwaukee from this day last year (9-20-04 5:53AM) The Brew's 70s-90s Classic Rock format pretty much shook up Milwaukee radio for the first time in a long time. They dumped their long time (1984-2004) AC format the Friday before and started stunting with songs with "Air" and "America" in the artist and titles along with Al Franken bits basically to make everybody believe they were going Air America like their sister station WXXM Madison did a couple weeks before.

WEXT-104.7 from Friday:

NextMedia's Current/Classic Country WEXT "104.7 The Wolf" Sturtevant, WI went out at 12:04 last Wednesday and started stunting by simmulcasting sister station WIIL-95.1 "95 WIIL ROCK" Kenosha, WI down the hall. It was then revealed that WEXT would become the Milwaukee market's first Spanish FM Friday at 10AM. They tried to launch "La GranD" Friday at 10 but it didn't work so they waited until 11:55. This is :45 worth of the simmulcast recorded from WEXT. It starts at 8:46AM. At 9:00 they last use of the WEXT calls ran. They were supposed to switch to WDDW at 10 but it didn't go through so they failed to ID the station with the new calls for the 10AM hour. This is probably the reason why they launched the new Spanish format with the TOH ID at 11:55 instead of Noon (They also played the TOH at noon) This :45 is part of a full :90 tape. On the other side of the tape you can hear them trying to launch the new format ontop of the simmulcast. I'll post that one later if anybody wants to hear it.

Side Note: You'll notice the aircheck starting with Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness" completely uncensored. It was the first song WIIL played when the simmulcast started Wednesday afternoon.

You'll also find a scoped copy of the launch of the new Regional Mexican format. I didn't copy the full thing to MP3 but this is close enough.
