"The Brew"

Soon CC will blow up Star for Wild's new home on 101.3, and launch eclectic rock The Brew (heard in Milwaukee, Columbus & Omaha) on 94.9. Star's displaced audience will head to Alice, which is WAY much better than Star, and Star is more younger skewing.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by PassDutch on 09/25/05 08:10 PM.</FONT></P>

Wishful thinking, dude. CC isn't going to experiment in a top 25 market with that format yet. Why do you think that format is where it is? San Francisco is market #4 ... Milwaukee is #32, Columbus is #35, Omaha is #72.

And your post on the subject on the Los Angeles board was laughable. Looking at the playlists for the three "Brew" stations thus far, the stations are targeted at 18-34 white males. That's not a prime demo in most of California.

To succeed in this state, a format flip has to have Hispanic appeal. Even English language formats have to appeal to that demographic. Star has decent female Hispanic numbers ... CC isn't going to blow that up anytime soon.<P ID="signature">______________

Oh boy. Here we go again.

Soon Susquehanna will blow up KNBR-1050 and bring in The Doghouse, and launch Country Hits Of The Fifties "The Mule Train" (heard in Topeka, Duluth and Fargo and other third-tier podunk markets). KNBR-1050's displaced audience will move to 990/KATD where the new "Fred" format -- nothing but classic theme songs from Hanna-Barbera cartoons -- is going to start promptly at 2 a.m. this Tuesday morning. Be sure to stay up and listen in!

What a bad idea?! What is CC thinking? SF needs A Top 40 station! Not an an electric rock station!

> Oh boy. Here we go again.

He's made the same prediction in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Tulsa, and Atlanta (so far).

You must not have looked very hard! The format plays well among Persons 25 - 54. The "Brew" format includes plenty of songs that test well with females, too, not just men.

What would lead you to believe a format centered on 80's Rock Hits (Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Journey) targets 18 - 34 year olds?

Where you & I do agree is the fact that this would be a poor format choice for the Bay Area, although not necessarily for the reason you cited.

I won't argue about the age range, but among the "plenty of songs that test well with females" are many that will turn females away.

Call it a slip on my part. I'm so used to thinking in terms of 18-34 for rock stations that I didn't adjust for the "classic" orientation.

I don't think the format would play well outside of the "heartland".<P ID="signature">______________

CC is not in the business of experimenting with formats you think the market "needs." CC is in the business of making money and generating cash flow. They will not blow up Star and move Wild so long as they are making several million a month with the pair as is.

The format sounds like it might do quite well in Salem, Mass. lol lol lol

Living in Milwaukee (home of 97.3 The Brew), 'eclectic' would be the last thing I'd call it. It's mostly 80's rock, with lots of hair bands. Actually, it looks like KSAN is doing that kind of thing already (or pretty close to it).

The Brew was actually inspired by The Drive in Detroit. They started the format. Columbus and Omaha just started their own 'Brews' this week. The one in Columbus seems to differ a bit, and the one in Omaha looks like a carbon copy of Milwaukee's Brew.

And it looks like it may be burning out a bit. After a wild year which saw Milwaukee's Brew jump up to #2 in the market, they crashed hard in the latest trend. I think they just burned out the music too fast, listeners got bored, and went back to the stations they came from.<P ID="signature">______________

I hear they are going to change one of the stations in Las Vegas as the Brew.

What station? Oldies KQOL? The other three stations in the CC Vegas cluster are all doing very well. It seems that LV is already oversaturated with classic rock/classic hits/80s stations, etc. That's why "The Brew" would surprise me. If you really did hear this, you should bring the subject up on the Nevada board.

As for "The Brew" in SF. I agree with those who say it's too "heartland" for the Bay area. Plus as someone mentioned KSAN is already covering a lot of that music (and trending up since adding some "newer classics").

HB used to churn those shows out like they were on an assembly line - there are probaly at least 50 of them if you count the lesser shows - anybody else remember "Touche Turtle?" The sad thing is, "Fred's" playlist would probably be almost as long as some of the other stations in the market.

Good point. LA 18-34 is 55% Hispanic and 12% Black and 10% Asian. That leaves how many non-Hispanic whites?

Not for hair bands, at least. Dude, it's Cali, man.

Using the Toon Tracker site (<a target="_blank" href=http://members.aol.com/PaulEC1/HBHall.html>http://members.aol.com/PaulEC1/HBHall.html</a>) as a guide, here is the "Fred" playlist (H-B cartoons with their own themes):

Atom Ant
Dastardly & Muttley
The Flintstones
Harlem Globetrotters
Hong Kong Phooey
Huckleberry Hound
The Jetsons
Jonny Quest
Josie and the Pussycats
Lippy the Lion
Magilla Gorilla
Peter Potamus
Quick Draw McGraw
Ruff and Reddy
Scooby Doo
Secret Squirrel
Space Ghost
Super Friends
Top Cat
Touché Turtle
Wacky Races
Wait Till Your Father Gets Home
Wally Gator
Yogi Bear

This actually reminds me of the premise in the movie "Demolition Man" where, in the future, radio has devolved to playing nothing but classic commercial jingles.<P ID="signature">______________

How about a TV's Greatest Hits station? There are probably as many cuts on that set as some stations play in rotation (but at about a minute each, would burn even quicker!)

Isn't "The Brew" supposed to be geared to MIDWEST markets? As in, places where blue collar "men's men" make things with their hands and beer is a staple? [end generalization]

Exactly correct, sir.

That's what I meant when I said the demographics are all wrong in California. They are just as wrong in the Pacific Northwest, in the South, and in Oklahoma.<P ID="signature">______________
