The Bridge Debuts

I was snowed in today so I was able to record the transition on WKLI. Around 10:10(not 10:09) Magic went off. There was a few seconds of dead air. Then came a loop of a human heartbeat for 15-30 minutes. Hard to listen to. Then "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" kicked off a half hour or so of Christmas music. Finally, a few minutes before 11am, the Bridge came to life with a country song.(Oh, PLEASE, NOT COUNTRY). But then a slow pop song came on.(HOORAY! IT'S NOT COUNTRY!). The Bridge format is..........VARIETY! A Beach Boys Oldie, some modern tunes I'm not familiar with, and now as I write this, it's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" And What is the "Bridge" about? It's about "crossing over".
For you music format experts, would this be like a "JACK" mix?

Uh, no...have heard the lame ass imaging... Obviously no imagination...and no connection to an audience...wasting space between songs....

Ok...I listened to this big change today. I also think that the beating of the heart went a little long, as well as the Christmas songs. After all is said and done the music is ok...just ok. Is it just me or are they way off course here? Not to sound like a broken record but they flushed a station with ratings down the drain to try and pull ratings away from WGNA. The whole goal was to give B95 the advantage over WGNA. As far as I can see 100.9 The Bridge can only hurt B95. They are playing songs from Chicago, Billy Joel, and Styx...all b95 artist. They done pulled out the gun and shot a foot off...and don't even get me started on the Chuck Taylor rumor. Is this change it for ABC or will there be more...B95 perhaps?

Yes, it would! And it could use new call letters, too -- WOTB -- as in "We're On The Bridge". Yes, I checked -- they're still avalilable from the FCC.

Another homogenized mix of crap. Pamal seems to be taking it's cues from Clear Channel these days, instead of doing something original and perhaps a little cutting edge and daring, they moved a very successful format from FM to AM (which will surely be its demise) and launched a wide playlist AC station to compete with their other AC station, which is why they moved the Magic format in the first place. What a bunch of loosers. I hope they fail.

Didn't hear it, but from what's been posted here, sounds like the Bridge to nowhere. The transition, according to posts here, sounded "small market." A heartbeat for 30 minutes followed by Christmas music? That's the best they could do?

You would think a company/ group that is making a change of this magnitude, in large part to protect it's cash cow, shoould have launched a format that attracts a different audience or demo than B95.5 and certainly not another radio station in their stable that shares a playlist like Magic did and The Bridge still does.

???

:) Ok,so let's think about this for a minute.....this has to be a "bridge" to the new format soon to be disclosed. There is no way they would shoot themselves in the foot and compete against B95. If this was the final product, their website would be completed and NOT listed as coming soon!! As much as I like the format....the variety.....there is no chance they will keep this format. If this were the case, then just adjust the music and keep Magic 100.9. Easily could have switched WROW 590am to an easy listening format to keep the "mature audience" like myself. Let's give ABC some credit....I don't think this is the final plan at all......but gets them some publicity and some hype for the final product. The economy is not the greatest and ALL broadcasters are fighting for a smaller portion of the advertising pie....they are NOT going to risk losing advertising dollars from B95. Give it some time and "The Bridge" will fall to reveal the TRUE product.

Tom, I've never heard about an interim format that took weeks to reveal, only to be replaced a few more weeks from now.

Either a station will pull the plug on an underperforming format and stunt while it looks for a replacement (not the case here since Magic was doing OK and they warned us for weeks it was switching to AM 590)...

Or it will take a few weeks of speculation to unveil a new format with a new name: The Bridge.

They even did the whole thing with the heartbeat and the Christmas songs. You don't do that leading to an interim format that will be gone in a few more weeks. Would they bring back the heartbeat and the Christmas songs when the permanent format gets revealed? No, I think The Bridge is here to stay even if the website isn't ready yet.

Now the question... is Pamal competing with itself with a format on 100.9 fairly close to 95.5? If this is an adult hits format similar to Jack, then I suppose it might be compatible with 95.5, despite sharing some music. In Dallas, CBS put Jack on one frequency while it also had a Soft AC existing in that market. Same in Minneapolis. Adult Hits shares more with Classic Rock than with Soft AC.

Adult Hits is a cheap format to run. The CBS Jacks have no DJs... just an image voice making snide remarks and mentioning localities so it has some connection with the market. Here it appears The Bridge will have a morning show. But who knows if the hiring ends there.

And The Bridge will do little to diminish WGNA's ratings. So I guess using 100.9 to knock WGNA down a few pegs in the ratings is not Pamal's goal after all. I guess if it picks up a couple of ratings points, Pamal can sell it in combination with WYJB since the demos will likely be similar. Usually Adult Hits skews a few years younger than Soft AC... but close enough.

KBradio, you are not wrong. The only thing missing is the Todd Pettengill liners. Of course, what failed miserably in 1996 might just work in 2010, right?

The "Bridge" is what? What the hell does it mean? It does not bring any emotion. It is not engaging. It doesn't conjour up any pictures in my head. It lacks market attachement on every level. It's not even a word you can have fun with. Point less! Put a station on in Jamaica and call it the "Island". 100.9 yahmon! That's makes sense. If you have to explain it then you've blown it!
