The Bright Network has an affiliate!

Having no affiliates since KOCD dropped it, BA's now got one affiliate for this highly successful "Bright" Network. Sources tell me Green Bay's triplet of stations at 92.7, 96.9, and 98.9 have gone away from the smooth jazz network to the Bright network. And from the looks of their playlist on the website, it looks to be true. All smooth AC vocals with maybe one or two generic instrumentals thrown in for good measure.

Apparently they've dropped the "Bright" name and are just calling it the Smooth AC network now. www.smoothac.com. Second name change in less than a year... what a "Bright" idea.

On the other hand, Green Bay recently lost its soft AC formatted simulcast duo (94.3/99.7) to a classic rock/hits format, so it's likely WAUN made the switch to fill that hole. WQLH (Star 98), the market's Hot AC, was the closest thing the market had to mainstream AC after 94.3/99.7 flipped. From a market perspective the switch makes sense. I assume the reason they didn't just flip to full-out AC was that they didn't want to completely turn off the jazz fans.

Of course I remember when this was a Jones SJ affiliate...

The website says this format is designed to fill in the gap for a softer music mix as mainstream A/C moves toward more of a post 1990 focus and more tempo. Which is (ta-da) what I said about it when they first did it ;) They are saying 25-54 but I'm thinking more 40-64 since the focus seems to be on songs that are around 30 years old..35 year olds were still in diapers (or a glint in their mama's eye) when warhorses like "Breezin" and "Feels So Good" came out.

I really hate to admit this on this board, but I've been listening to Smooth Bays and I have to say I like it. Now I'm not suggesting that Smooth AC should ever replace Smooth Jazz, but I think this would work in some of the more non-jazz-friendly markets. Consider this, even though I grew up in a city with great jazz stations around, I now live in a radio market which is very conservative. The only exposure to smooth jazz on the radio they've ever had as a half-hearted attempt about 10 years ago which lasted about 6 months. A station like Smooth Bays could easily grab attention away from the dominating AC in the market. It has been a long, long time since artists like Sade and Anita Baker were heard on the radio here. Then if it becomes successful, sure, add some more jazz, but I think a format like this could be a good starting point for those difficult markets.

You're caving in-

No. I'm just stuck in a radio market that has nothing even remotely jazzy. Even the NPR station here only plays jazz for one hour per day! At this point, I'd be happy with anything close.
