Interestingly, the Brunswick book came out today and WKQL tanked in their own backyard. Since this is a two book a year market, here's how it plays out: WKQL comes in at #16 12+. As Arrow they managed to get about halfway between a 2 and a 3 last Spring. In the Fall, again as Arrow, they had about a 1 point increase over their Spring number. Now, here it is, Spring 2005 and WKQL posts about ONE THIRD of their Fall number as Arrow. As you know, I can't mention specific book numbers but you can easily check that out.

Not a very impressive start in Brunswick.

Not surprised. Since the Jax book came out, the comments generated have been for the most part right on the money. Renda, in my opinion, gets part of the blame. I don't recall seeing/hearing any significant promotion of the station. Despite the lack of promotion, if the station were programmed correctly, there would be something there to attract listeners. They are all over the board and there is little consistancy in sound.

From Day One, I talked about the importance of programming and personality for this type format and both are lacking big time here. Apparently, there is a fly by the seat of your pants mentality with very little planning. One specific example is when our friend MBurg reported that Briggs indicated the station would remain automated except for morning drive for the time being. Not a week later, Tom Murphy was signed on. It almost sounds to me there was a little money found somewhere and the green light was given. This is not a way to compete successfully. I'm still not too sure what the station is or wants to be. But almost anyone will tell you if the listener can't figure what it is - it will be avoided.

Tom loves being on the radio and all I can say is I hope he is happy. I have a feeling he's just putting up with the latest in an overall radio decline.

WKQL is not a Brunswick station! It is a Jacksonville station. True the tower is located in Kingsland but the station does no marketing or anything up there.

Hey that thing about the station remaing automated was a direct email from Briggs himself and if any of you who want to see the email I will be willing to send it to you to prove what I was talking about. For Tom Murphy being hired that was like three to four weeks later not one week.

Yes, WKQL is a Brunswick station. And what marketing do you see them doing in Jacksonville that I'm missing?? (It must be the same marketing they do in Brunswick!) Their nearest competitor is WGCO (Oldies 98.3) in Midway which managed to have big gains in the Brunswick book. And WGCO is another example of a bad oldies staion, although not for all of the same reasons as WKQL.

Finally, WSOL is a Brunswick station, and they don't program to Brunswick yet they're number ONE in the market!

Hmmmmm!

I think most of us would get a pretty good laugh out of reading an actual "direct e-mail" from Briggs! Bring it on!

What makes you think that Briggs was even "in the loop" when it came to hiring Tom Murphy?

We don't doubt that you received the e-mail from Briggs, but from now on, like any good reporter, you need to consider the credibility of your sources.

Mburg - you are not following my point. The fact that Briggs talked about keeping the station automated and then within a relatively short period of time, Tom Murphy is signed on, shows clearly that long term planning and strategy are not really taking place. The expectations for the station are minimal at best.

Funny you two mention the insightful comments reflected above...

WKQL does no marketing, but the signal comes in. Sounds lots like
The Gator in Jacksonville --- what an amazing parallel ---
ah, and the numbers seem to be about AS BAD for WKQL in
Brunswick as WGNE in Jacksonville and yet, you're both IN LOVE
with 99.9 The Gator. Has one of you proposed yet?

Show me where I have ever written anything defending Gator. Country is not my format of choice.

Considering WGNE has only been on the air 3 months and has all ready taken a big bite out of WROO, thats a good sign. It is funny that CC is now copying Gatore with the slogan free summer concert series. HMM they have one in Sept. GNE has 4 in Aug. By the way the tower for Gator is in Jacksonville now.

As for WKQL true the siganl is in Kingsland and the station did better as WWRR but who cares. Local advertisers in Georgia don't buy the station anyway.
