The buffoonery at KABC continues

This morning Doug was trying his utmost best to play up the big announcement to his 50 or so listeners that John Phillips (aka Glee superfan) was coming back to light up the ratings from 9am to 10pm. Deja Vu strikes again at KABC. It didn't take long for Geraldo to give up on that spot which he took from who? oh yes from John Phillips.

The PD's at KABC definitely suffer from a Hippocampus brain defect and somehow cannot seem to recall anything more than what happened a few minutes ago. First it was Larry Elder was a dud and then a year later he wasn't. Now the same thing with John Phillips.

It's so laughable. It's about time they convert that station into some other format.

Yes---bring back the "two-way radio" format that was on KLAC in the mid-1960s. Instead of hosts just talking and talking, let the hosts spend their entire airshifts taking calls from listeners on whatever subjects the listeners want to discuss. I'd certainly listen.

"Hello caller, what's on your mind? But first, please turn down your radio. I said please turn down your radio..."

"Next caller...you're on the air, what's on your mind? Oops, we had to punch the seven-second delay."

"Hello Mike from the Valley, what's on your mind? Uh, Mike you're fading out, looks like you have a bad cell connection."

More simulated talk radio :)

What format would you suggest that hasn't already been tried on 21st century AM radio in Los Angeles?

There is no format aimed at the general market that can be successful on an impaired signal.

In other words, look at the areas where the signal is actually good, examine the demographics in that area, discover who is underserved/unserved, and find a programming niche that will fill the hole.

Or go with a brokered time model where revenue, not ratings drives the business decisions.

TtRe: The buffoonery at KABC continues

There's an Ethiopian community on Fairfax about a mile from the KABC transmitter. Maybe they should go all Ethiopian all the time.

Sex-talk format,?? what is the most unusual place? the kitchen? laundry room? like Don Chamberland

Maybe we can lob dry ice bombs over the Cumulus wall on LA Cienega and blow up the joint?

Or is kabc imploding with Doug Mackintire, T-Rae "mumbles" Elmer and
the liberal faux red-white-blue conservative Geraldo?

"And thanks for taking my call." That one used to really drive me up the wall. Don't listen to talk (or much radio except internet streaming) now, so I don't have the pleasure of hearing fingernails on the blackboard when the doofuses parrot that one. :)

I refuse to listen to anyone who begins by saying "Long-time listener, first-time caller." So you've had nothing worth saying before now, eh? Click!

Does anyone here remember KADS? In 1966 Gordon McLendon bought KGLA-103.5 and installed an all-advertising format. Along with the paid advertising, listeners called in to talk about things they wanted to sell or buy. The format lasted only a few months before the station became adult contemporary KOST. I wonder how KABC would do with an all-ads format. And if Clara from North Hollywood is able to sell her refrigerator for $75, she'll tell all her friends to listen to KABC and the ratings will start climbing.

You probably said that in jest, but you are on the right track. There are many ethnic communities that might find great value in a station aimed at their particular demographic.

KIRN 670 has been around for a number of years serving the Iranian community. Other Asian language broadcasters seem to be hanging in there. I live in Houston where we have a number of Asian language stations on AM. These would have gone silent years ago had they not embraced a different business model.

Lots of history behind KABC but perhaps it is time to give up on the English language talk and go in a radically different direction.

Speaking of KIRN, any news on the construction permit for 35kw? At a glance it would greatly improve coverage in greater LA (and given the SSW pattern might serve the Farsi speakers in Tahiti as well. ;D)

"As I was just telling your screener..."

And don't forget "I have a question" and "I have a couple of points that I want to make." Nobody needs to say those things---just ask your fershlugginer question and make your fershlugginer points!

I do remember K-ADS and it was fascinating listening....for about 15 or 20 minutes. I was surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

That CP is apparently dead. It no longer shows in the FCC database.

If you look at the site on a flat map, it looks OK. But the area between the Littlerock site and the edge of the LA population consists of solid, 5000 to 6000 ft high mountains. Add in the fact that the site is to the "other" side of the San Andreas fault (thought to be a further impediment to a good signal) and the site likely would not have worked.

Gordon actually got a year out of it, and lost a fortune. He changed it to KOST, but KOST wouldn't be adult contemporary until the early 80s. From 1967 until then, it was beautiful music.

An interesting read, the whole story of KADS, from a McLendon bio (Thanks, Google Books!): http://books.google.com/books?id=8aZFvxDSxIQC&pg=PA141&lpg=PA141&dq=kads+los+angeles&source=bl&ots=lr7OM8mxyu&sig=SHQhXfn3-osORfDcJ_aFvnvmmrY&hl=en&sa=X&ei=khu-UaK3DuHk0gHRkYHQDg&ved=0CEYQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=kads%20los%20angeles&f=false
