The Bull gets a midday jock, but not really.

Rodney Ho says that The Bull has a midday jock. CC, once again doing a bangup job of controlling the marketing of their stations, allowing their latest talent to be seen in the AJC website with his TAMPA BAY BUCS jersey on! Swift.

http://www.accessatlanta.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/accessatlanta/radiotalk/entries/2007/03/17/317_new_midday.html

Does anyone now think that Clear Channel gives a crap at all about programming and aren't just in it so those slick con artists known as the Mays family can swindle the shareholders into squeezing every last dime out of the company before they bow out?

What's not mentioned in the article, but what is painfully obvious is that this new guy is a VT. It's amazing how Clear Channel, in a top 10 market, has so little revenue, that they can't afford to hire and move someone from a smaller market for one of their "new" stations. Not even a couple of months old and The Bull is already being run like a once legendary station that is on life support.

Where is Sarbanes-Oxley when you need it?

You know its frustrating....as a guy who worked in this market for 8 yrs, had good numbers in every day part, I've been trying to get in with the "Bull," and they won't give me the time of day. I was told they haven't started hiring weekenders yet. :-\
I also feel for my friend "FIN" too. He would've been a great fit on middays but they didn't think it would be a good idea to put him on the "Bull."
I don't care if you've worked at one station, or one format for a long time, if you're a good jock, you can do ANY format.

Good luck with CC. They're gonna need it.

Well said, Tim. There are many good/great unknown/known talent in this town right now scraping by to make ends meet. I know a bunch of us wouldn't care if we're making the "big bucks" right now, but good enough to put food on the table, pay the bills, and give us a little extra cash for a keg and a couple of t-bones for the weekend to wind down. Is that so much to ask for? Evidently, it is.

I have one question about The Bull. How are they planning on beating Kicks?

Both stations have comparable great signals from the same transmitter site. So based on signal alone, The Bull has to be reckoned with.

But Kicks has true personalities. Cadillac Jack and Bill Cellar are both heritage jocks who have been in the market for ages, especially Cellar. I personally don't care for Bill Cellar, but he certainly has a fan base. (Wasn't he voted #1 in an Access Atlanta poll recently?) And while Wylie is not really my taste, she is a personality and definitely distinctive, and has an obvious love of country music. And I know people on this board will disagree with me, but I like the Kicks morning show. It might not offer the attempted humor of other morning shows, but it's a solid show featuring 3 pros.

We all expected middays on The Bull to be voicetracked. The next question is whether the station will pick up a syndicated show for morning drive. And while afternoon jock Lance Houston sounds okay, his sound is pretty stereotypical of a medium market jock who mostly reads liner cards.

The Bull is positioned between Kicks and Eagle, and I do like the fairly recent "oldies" in the mix (although I'm not sure how stuff like CCR and John Mellencamp got into the rotation). And I realize I'm early; we've yet to hear The Bull with its entire sound in place.

But based on what I've heard so far, I'm just wondering how The Bull expects to beat Kicks.

I, too, just scratch my head and wonder......
Why would you roll out a format this way??
You have a heritage station already in the market....40 years as a country station(WBIE before it was WKHX.....Jim Wider 24/7!!) which ALSO owns a flanker playing country. Why would you come in, doing the same ol' stale 10,000,000,0000 in a row WITH commercials, in the middle of Christmas season, with no Christmas music?
You hire a kid from market 250, maybe a nice guy but WAAAAY over his head here....let him tepidly voice track a shift, and play a Marshall Tucker cut every other hour along with John Couger Mellencamp and Elton John???
No morning show...rumours that it will be syndicated.....no middays....no nights.Total lack of focus demograpically and formatically.
I'm usually wrong about these things but it sure looks like another failed attempt for ClearChannel.
What's next??

Why do you'all keep asking the same question over and over? CC is a crappy company. They don't believe in radio that's why there slowly getting out. Same with CBS. Hopefully when these idiots finally get out a company that believes in real radio will get in. That's our only hope. In radio biggere is not better.

Maybe moving to Atlanta but we understand toVT Tampa and some other market out of Atlanta. Fact remains same, CC will maximize use of talent, offer no new opportunities.

Roddy....you buy time in Atlanta....are you on or off the Bull???....thats the real measure of whats going on...whos spending their money on it?....I seriously doubt 1) anyone is desiring the product and 2) that anyone is paying anywhere near top dollar rates...

This has to be a constant fire sale...all the while Kicks keeps its rates in the 700 plus range for drives.

From a business standpoint wouldn't it be wise to maximize the use of talent? If you owned a business wouldn't you want the people that do a good job to hold more responsibility... and for those individuals that do a good job, shouldn't they be allowed to have more opportunities? I'm not saying radio is perfect by any means... but most business' would do the same. Maximize talent, minimize cost...that's the way of life.

Most business yes. Radio is a creative and passion business. But even then only to a point you dont compromise effectiveness. Atlanta is a top 10 market, Tampa market 20. I guess Greenville is also in the mix, but clearly smaller. Three different markets, all have a need to be local. I dont want to hear about Atlanta, Atlanta could care less about Tampa. Hard to impaging they dont bleed together.

Anyway, the point is more that none of CC moves are about the BEST use of people, they are about using anyone they can to death, and showing savings to Wall Street. Thats why we have no passion anymore, and why they get beat up by ex employees.

Who are you kidding? Rewarding talent by paying them an addition $2,500 a YEAR to VT in another market? Come on, that's a joke. Their business model is a proven failure with Atlanta being the crowning jewel of disgrace. What a wealth of ideas these people have, from The Bull to suggesting Southside Steve live on a billboard until Ted Turner bought the Braves back. Hard to succeed when your money people have no clue and your programming people are stuck in 1989.

And someone brought up CBS. Say what you will, but CBS uses live talent and still has a commitment to radio, unlike CC.

I've been wondering what happened with Fin because when 96rock ended it was said that he was still with CC but they couldn't say where.
Best of luck to you Rhodes. I really can't understand why you're still not back on the air. Out of all the DJs who have lost their jobs over the last few years- I miss hearing you the most. Hopefully in your case it will be longer the wait...sweeter the reward!

Rhodes and Fin are both good jocks and both should be on the air. They'd also be a perfect fit for The Bull (for the audience and the clients). Too bad they have a pulse and would require a salary.

It's not maximizing anything when you are putting out a lousy product.

From their streetwalker prostitute level websites, to their cut and paste, Windows Media Center run musical formats, the Soviets at CC commonly turn good business practice on it's head with corporate doublespeak like this. Now, paying a mediocre, inexperienced person a high five figure salary to do four jobs badly is called "maximizing talent." Who knows? Maybe Atlanta, market #10, in 2007, hasn't seen the last of the Morning Man/PD Who Makes Sales Calls and Writes Copy. Hamburger Helper, anyone? Hey, it's helping the hamburger!

From a business standpoint, where on the bottom line have these wonderful efficiencies shown up? That cluster is glaring but is not alone in a ratings and revenue nosedive for several years thanks to this dubious formula for success. The Mays' have postponed one sale vote, and are going around the country trying to con shareholders who are extremely skeptical of their talent maximizing to vote yes. It's comical.

You understand Paul will be voicetracking Tampa? Why then does the PD have an ad for a PM jock on All Access? I think someone is giving you bad info.

Thank you! I appreciate the support. As for the voice track talk. I Vt'ed nights for Charlotte while at 96rock. They paid me $250 before taxes every 2 weeks for 6 shows a week. It got old REAL quick! Trust me, they don't get your A material for $100 a week. You get liners....more liners....and then....more liners...
Big Rig was the best I heard at VT'ing. The guy had good stuff every night and he sounded local. I guess if you do 5/6 markets, the 6k a year ads up, but the work it takes is overwhelming.
