I've been reading lots of postings about changes, etc in the market as of late. Here is my two cents.
1. 92.1 Kiss-FM has gone nowhere. Look for a format change there very shortly. Smart money says oldies due to Kool abandoning the format.
2. No Bob and Tom on Wizard Sat morning. Simply a satellite problem or not carrying the Sat "best-of" anymore? Maybe. But could bigger changes be afoot? Possibly. Perhaps the format change that was rumored? I wouldn't bet against it.
Does it make sense to move Kool to "Classic Hits" and compete almost directly with WIZN when there is already another classic rocker on the dial? No, it didn't to me either.
The attitude of the market manager at Hall is definitely that the Buzz/Wizard staff are second-rate citizens. There salespeople are on a lower commission structure than their counterparts at WOKO/WKOL/WJOY. All meetings are held on Joy Drive...never on the waterfront. During a recent sales promotion the Joy Drive sales team got the chance to sell the joint promotion first. If they add an A/c to the group and hurt Star...WOKO winds up even more dominant.
Yes, i know it didn't make sense to make KOOL Classic Hits if they wanted to add an A/c to the group and hurt Star. The smart money would have been to lighten up the Wizard a bit...hang onto a good portion of the men...and change KOOL to A/C. But you forget...KOOL is on Joy Drive and the local Market Manager isn't going to hurt his babies there. Let the Wizard/Buzz staff take it on the chin.
They paid 17 mil for WIZN and another 2.5 for Buzz---so they have over a $19 mil investment in those stations. And the Market Manager is treating them like yesterday's day old bagels. Glad his neck is on the line and not mine.
3. I got a call at home from The New Eagle...asking me to listen in the morning for a specific song and when it's repeated in the afternoon call in to win $100. I was impressed...telemarketing and going after it.
Looks like Hall will have an interesting year on all fronts.
