The Business

There was an earlier post about Dan Neaverth and this article about former Bills star, Jeff Burris in Tuesday's Buffalo News that gave me pause.

How do people in this business define themselves? Seems like most people who post here are broadcasters; real broadcasters who dig the business and have had a measure of success to one degree or another. There are some who've left the business but stay in touch, such as Mark Giardina. But really, how do people in the business define themselves, especially when the end of their careers are in sight? What happens when the career is over? Do they hang on pathetically or, like Tom Shannon, ride off into the sunset with a lasting farewell?

There are times when I think Neaverth got screwed by Entercom because he never got to say "goodbye" on his last day. Then again, you might ask, why should he be any different than most of the poor bastards who get fired in the business. You might offer that his last day could have turned nasty with him busting on the company and his callers joining in the outrage. Still, the guy was a legend and you'd think Entercom would have allowed him the dignity to sign off one last time.

And then, there are the athletes who transition out of the locker room and think they'll easily and automatically transition to the broadcast booth. Most soon realize that doing play by play, color or full blown sports on TV or radio isn't as easy as it looks and sounds. Some ex-jocks rise to the top, while others get a dose of hard reality and move on. Steve Tasker and Paul Maguire are examples of guys who understood that being a broadcaster requires hard work. Jim Kelly, one of the greatest Bills ever, never really cut it on ESPN and although he's improved, is better accepted locally.

It really is too bad for Jeff Burris. He was a magnificent athlete, but he was battling a serious illness and didn't understand what it took to be a good color man, especially what it takes to rise to the level of a broadcaster like John Murphy and a vastly improved Alex Van Pelt. One wonders if the Bills will give him a second chance to turn his life and his career around.

I for one intend to hang on as pathetically as humanly possible.

Now, excuse me while I skulk into the next room and open a vein.

Element...shame shame.........................

Pathos & Paychecks

I believe that most of us will hang on pathetically until somebody stops offering us a paycheck.

PS - Tom Shannon "hanging on pathetically" was still more entertaining that A LOT of the younger voices reading liner cards and/or voice-tracking.

I don't think Mr. Nines intention was to say that Tom was hanging on pathetically.....at least I hope not! Tom's anything but pathetic.
As a matter of fact, I would take but a small percentage of his talent and consider it a charitable gift.

On top of being a legendary broadcaster, he is also one of the best people ever.

Re: Pathos & Paychecks

Speaking of the business of radio;

I ran across an article on Netscape News that read thusly:

(Sao Paulo, Brazil)
Prostitutes in the Brazilian city of Salvator are starting up their own radio station.

The Association of Prostitutes of Bahia state has won government permission for the project, enabling Radio Zona to start broadcasting during the second half of the year.

>So, it appears that radio continues to be operated by the same management types across the planet.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest.....I'll go away for awhile.

Traffic reports might be interesting.

I don't think nine was saying that about Tom shannon either. That's not what I got from reading it.

As for Danny not getting a chance to say that last goodbye maybe it's better this way. I doubt he would want a sob fest on his last day. He's much too upbeat for that.

Both men are super talents they have been around a long time. They have to be tough, to survive.

I have heard that Tom Shannon is a great guy to sit down and talk with. I hope I get the chance some day. Then I can tell him about the kid he stuck a mic in front of while working on WGR at the Fair.

Humble Apologies

Either I misread El Nueve's (not to be confused with El Niño) original post, or it was edited after I replied. In either event, I humbly apologize if I misread his post, or incorrectly understood his intended meaning.

I hope that I will be extended a fluorinic dispensation.

Clarification From Periodic Table of Elements

No, no and no.

The word "or" and the subsequent comma denotes a change of sentiment, contrary to the previous clause. ALW got it right, as did Mike.

"Do they hang on pathetically or, like Tom Shannon, ride off into the sunset with a lasting farewell?" Meaning Tom Shannon did NOT hang on, having been given a fitting farewell. That having been written, I will apologize for the word "pathetically" which was far too strong and not should have been omitted altogether. The guys who hang on should be applauded. Ten lashes with a 36 point exclamation mark for me!

New Format

Rumor has it, the format of this station will be Salvator's
Greatest Hits. You'll have to think about this. For best
effects, read out loud, slowly; as if you were introducing a
classic 60's girl group. Wait forrrrr it...

BTW, always good to read the posts from "alw" or, as Jerry Adams' top of the hour WWOL-AM legal ID used to say, "Your pal, Al..."

I hear that there were TWO of them...

I'm thinking a subscription service. Pastrick will shell out for a "solid hour" of it...all in singles. Yet, only last to about the "10 break."

LOL...by the way, have you implicitly given us any new insights into the thoughts behind WHTT's format and positioners? ;-)
