The Buzz Has Lost it's Sting

After eight years at Cromwell active rocker WBUZ Nashville plusand 16 years with the company, PD Russ Schenck has left the building.

Sad to see, nice guy and someone who had the passion and expertise to make the station work.

Is this the proverbial budget cut since they re-treaded Lisa Manning with Dean" Original Uum Game" Warfield?

Good luck to Russ. He will be missed. He was the glue on the Buzz.

As far as I'm concerned, it never had any sting to begin with. I don't know what brand of format you call it, but it's not Good Ole AOR. The Rock @ 105.9 sucks too, as they play the same ole crap, day after day. Nashville doesn't have a decent Rock/AOR station....period.

As my usual comment, Nashville is 15-20 years behind the rest of the country, thenks to you damn consultants that THINK were nothing but stupid "trailer park rednecks"!

Sorry folks, I get on a rant and I don't mean to offend anybody.

I like the Rock. Good jocks and good music.

The Buzz has suffered from the transmitter issue and low budgets. I'm surprised anyone stayed that long. There's usually a very high turnover rate at that place.

Yeah.....what is that all about. Russ was everywhere and lived for that station. Word on the street is that the new Ops Manager Dean Warfield is a tool!!! This guy has always been a sidekick and now that he is given authority he is abusing the hell out of it and doing things to TOP RATED JOCKS that was done to him. I have met Bud (the owner) and I do wish he would open his eyes to see him ruining his station!!! First Hull and now Russ......if I were a jock there, I would be worrying about my job everyday. GOOD LUCK BUD REPLACING GREAT TALENT LIKE RUSS AND HULL!!!

And Dean.....try opening the mic up during your shift especially in the 9 hour and maybe you'll get two more listeners!!!

He needs to go back to being a side-kick. He is not top banana material except maybe in his own head.

The Buzz has an afterthought for quite a while now and it's certainly not for lack of air talent - the playlist has just been weird for a long time. However, Free Beer and Hot Wings is a definite improvement over Bob & Tom.

Maybe the exit is a sign of an upcoming swap of formats so V102.5 gets a stronger signal and gets to have a competitive chance against 92.9? With the dumb move of firing Rick Marino and the upcoming boring switch to Christmas music, this would be a prime time to launch the attack.

Or, maybe Russ is taking his good skills to someone that will give him a little freedom and pay him what he's worth?

I think V102.5 has sounded a lot better since Dean arrived. I'm not sure where the top rated jocks are that he's abusing, unless #12 and #20 are now considered "top rated".

ScotWRMO, let me ask you this honest question. I know the jocks at 105.9 do what is asked of them. They have good announcing styles and deliveries and such, but do you think if someone told them to turn it lose. Pick and choose their music that was "within" their format, do you think they would know what to do with that sudden music freedom? Could they talk about the songs they were playing? Could they say that Dickey Betts was once with the Allman Brothers and now Derek Trucks played slide guitar for them. I think many could do that, but the sudden shock of having the handcuffs removed might take awhile to sink in. Could they also find a band that they really liked and then based on their love of that band, promote that band Let the people know about that band's music, the band's history, where the band was playing and so forth and so on. To me, what I have just pointed out was once very much a part of rock radio history. The DJs of old did all of those things naturally and perfectly. You know, it would be amazing to see what these talented young radio people might do.

shouldn't that be "incredible tigerkat"?

before you anonymously pat yourself on the back for a job well done, you might want want to hide your e-mail on your profile.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the ol' "kill two birds with one stone" argument: if Cromwell would buy 97.1 from Cumulus, we could have V102.5 with a possibly better signal, and it might be in the hands of someone who would know what to do with it. Actually, from where I live (Pegram), they come in just fine at 102.5, so I hope they stay there. I sometimes have a little trouble picking up 97.1. As for a 102.9/102.5 format swap, I hope that doesn't happen. Again, 102.5 is the better/stronger signal for me. On the car radio, I can pick up either frequency, but on my home stereo system, that is another story.

Sadly or gladly, Crummy ain't gonna sell out to Crommy.

V's still a sad joke. For a million plus market, why are we even giving consideration to the
auto-pilot, low rent sound? It's not going to touch 92.9 and no one is worrying about it at
SCRG. To compete they should flip V to 102.9 and start all over. The V name is lame. Some
of the music is good. But, it should be live and local until 12 mid. Then it might have a chance.

Has anyone noticed a change in Mix? It's 'rocking' a little more. And Jack Shell, what the shell?
is up at Q-108??? Is it becoming Rock 108? Did I hear really hear Marilyn Manson the other afternoon?

I'm with the earlier comment: When did it HAVE a "sting"? ???

Then there's this one: << I have met Bud (the owner) and I do wish he would open his eyes to see him ruining his station!!!>> Bud's an interesting study. You don't get to be in a position like his being out to lunch all the time. Still, there are times you talk with him and you wonder if anybody's home. You wonder if his really IS that out of touch with his own operations. Once upon a time, you even wondered if Bud really knew about some of the things being done by his former managers and P.D.s.

Still, the best description of life at "Cramwell" is came from someone on the inside: "It's a place you go to survived or die in your radio career."

I found that to be essentially accurate.

The "V" name is lame, but the "Venus" name was worse. I didn't listen while they were "Venus." At least they had the good sense to drop "Bob and Sheri." (Yes, I spelled her name right in case any of you want to go to their website, although I couldn't imagine why! ::) By the way, for those of you keeping track, that makes two Nashville stations that have dropped B&S, or should I say, "B.S."? ;D) I agree that they (overall) are lame, but they're actually one of the better choices (in their format) right now. Sad, isn't it? Yes, they should be live until midnight. But even 92.9 goes "Delilah" at 7:00, so..... :-\

I think 92.9 plays certain artists who fit their format without any regard to whether certain songs by those artists might not fit an AC format. When Billy Joel came out with Glass Houses, it was said to be an attempt by him to "throw a rock" at his previous image as a "crooner," largely courtesy of "Just the Way You Are." Yet 92.9 now plays "You May Be Right" right alongside "Just the Way You Are." (Side note here: listen closely to "Big Shot" next time you hear it. They have changed the line "don't come bitching to me," to "don't come crying to me"! ;D) Ditto 38 Special. "Second Chance" has been an AC fave for years. But now they also play "Hold On Loosely" and even "Caught Up in You." If they add "If I'd Been the One" (the one with Julianne Phillips in the video, check it out, it's on YouTube!) to their playlist, they might also be able to add ME as a listener! :)

"The Buzz Has Lost it's Sting." Wow, you must write imaging for the Buzz!!! Brilliant!

Hey Russ if you read this - Good Luck Bro. You can do much better than the Buzz.

"Still, the best description of life at "Cramwell" is came from someone on the inside: "It's a place you go to survived or die in your radio career."

Amen.

I didn't realize 92.9 was also playing "Hold On Loosely" now. Another reason to change the station. I love the Rock but they play that one way too much. A former PD told me said it always tested VERY well with listener/focus groups. I can live without it, though.

Only a few short years ago, people I knew at South Central (long gone) bragged that they didn't play "All I Wanna Do" by Sheryl Crow, telling me "we don't play songs about beer." Geez. During my days there, "Make It Like It Was" by Regina Bell and "Let's Talk It Over" (or whatever it was) by Grayson Hugh seemed to get more airplay than anything else, courtesy of our egomaniacal consultants.

Swiss, here’s my take on this. The jocks have liner notes (usually on a separate PC in the control room)with showprep on the artist, they read (ad lib) over it coming out of songs. A lot of it comes from Radio-n-Records, and other various industry sources. Yes, I agree the jocks (outside John Boy & Billy) have good, talented, jocks.

The days of jocks playing what they want, even at the non-commercials, like 88.5 WVCP. WVCP is just a training ground for students learning the industry. This will happen to 88.3 WMTS as well. I do see a day where the state board of regents (whom is over Vol State) will step in and change WVCP & WMTS to a more strict operation to coincide with the changing media industry. In addition, the FCC is started, along with the NAB, and the RIAA, raising issues of Payola, which are I have heard of one instance in this market within the past 5 years. WMOT has gone through the change, and I’m not sure how much of a student operated station it is anymore. WRVU is owned and operated by Vanderbilt Student Communications. I not sure if VSC is still getting funds from the school, but if it is, it will go that way someday. At Fisk, 88.1 WFSK has MUCH IMPROVED, and has a loyal Jazz audience.

There is too much control of radio these days due to consultants do what they claim “audience test” and my opinion is this, their test are not very accurate. Why? Well because the human attention span can be only held in an informal environment for maybe 10 minutes, they loose interest in the participation of the consultant’s surveys and test, due to the participants of the test have other things on their minds.

IMHO….AOR in 2008 should lean to a “Metal/Rockish” Edge, with New Groups/Artist mix “Selected Hard Cuts” with the old artist like Zeppelin, James Gang, Alice Cooper, Kiss, etc. None of this Southern Rock Stuff. Southern Rock here in the South for the past 25 years has been burned to death on the Lite AOR stations, as well as the CHR & AC stations. Playing titles like Sweet Home Alabama, Lord I was born a rambling man, Heard it in a love Song, etc, have NO BUSINESS being played on a Real Rock/AOR station. This ONE is the reason 97.1 sounds like a complete mess!

Much Improved? While the focus of this thread has been the lack of personality and freedom a jock has --- Fisk is nothing more than a jukebox plugged into a transmitter. Great way to sell new music when you have no idea who is playing.

Nock

WMTS has more freedom though than WVCP, since it is completely student run and programmed.

How do you mean a 'strict operation'? More automation? WMTS already runs automation during downtimes/holidays, so that's already covered (laughs).

WMOT still has some student involvement, primarily for voice tracking and production coordination. However, they haven't been 'student programmed' for many years (which is one reason why WMTS came along in the early '90's).

I don't think the Board Of Regents really cares what the stations do as long as they:

1) Don't say anything bad against the Board
2) Use excessive profanity/obscene stuff, etc. etc. etc.
3) Adhere to FCC rules and regs and school policy.

As long as the rules are followed, control of the stations will be left to school administration and/or advisement.

I dig WMTS -- luckily I can pick them up from where I live in Smyrna.
