The Buzz vs. 99X

Here are some random thoughts:The Buzz has a tie-in to the Braves 1:05 starts at the Ted and of course 105.3.99X gets you a chance to win a 4-pack of tickets to the Renaissance FestivalThe Buzz welcomes Nine Inch Nails, The Family Values Tour (Korn, Def Tones), Warp Tour, etc.99X welcomes those super groups the Flaming Lips, Cowboy Mouth, and OzomatliThe Buzz you get Whip in the mornings.99X gets you Leslie Fram. The Buzz playlist includes Slipknot, Avenge Sevenfold, Korn, Tool, Disturbed, Shinedown, Trapt, Godsmack, System of a Down, etc.99X playlist includes Dave Matthews, Matisyahu, Death Cab For Cutie, Coldplay, (okay I'll give them Pearl Jam and Wolfmother).I guess my point is that I'm finding myself listening more and more to The Buzz. (I'll probably have to give up my guy card for this but I'm kind of liking The Bert Show too.) 99X has lost it's edge. Maybe they are going for that middle of the Dave/Buzz road. Whatever, but it appears somebody stole their nutsack when they weren't looking. I thought they had something good when Axel, Wally, and Kim were handling mornings. This morning I got to hear Axel and Leslie talk about Axel's psychic powers?! I won't go as far as some in saying it's a sinking ship but in the words of Idol's Randy Jackson, "I'm just not feeling it dawg. It just isn't good for me."

Sad confession #2. I have also found myself listening to the Bert Show more. A year ago it was never. Today I pop in a couple of times a morning during my hour commute. Although Bert and Melissa I find annoying and tune out as soon as an estrogen strong topic comes up like debate working vs. stay-at-home moms. I get to listen to Mayhem on the Zone at least through the early Fall when the signal doesn't power up until later and then I will be desperate. I can't listen to 99x and I always liked Axl on the way home. Leslie sounds so fake, forced and rehearsed it is painful. "Axl tell us more about your weekend I bet iyou have a good story to tell us." She makes the phony morning show commercial touting the NBC prime time line-up sound interesting.

Dude, I dotted a little reading that, I swear.I like the Buzz music, don't care much for the jox. The closest I like is Ally but I wish she'd lose that fake voice. She should be doing traffic for 'SB with a "DJ voice" like that. I bet she'd be awesome if she just spoke like herself-- I've heard it and she's got a nice voice when she's not in carnival barker mode.Whip, I wish someone would step on his neck and lean in. Night guy sounds like someone's kid brother... or that little cartoon dog that used to bounce up and down next to "Spike" until the bulldog would slap him away, out of the frame. Double-down seems pretty suited for overnights and, no, that's not a dig. Overnights can be a cool, cool gig. He's a little pukey but has the right attitude. The imaging on the Buzz is the best in the market. It's so anti-Dave. Where the latter takes itself sooooo serious, the Buzz sounds like a bunch of drunk guys just trying to make themselves laugh. I love it.

you write:"Double-down seems pretty suited for overnights and, no, that's not a dig. CC is paying for someone to do live overnights? I would think ClearChannel would voicetrack it.

99x thinks there is a space between the Buzz and DAVE... they are wrong. People who like DAVE don't like the BUZZ and vice versa. 99x needs to go after DAVE FM and bury them. They already lost people to the BUZZ and I believe none of them will come back.

The imaging on The Buzz is really great. For the most part, I really like the Buzz jocks (especially Aly, Chris, Doubledown, and Dank). For the most part, all of their jocks have distinct styles, none of them really sound too much alike. While a lot of the jocks on 99X seem rather similar sounding to me. Steve Craig and Dekker are probably my favorites there. I listen to both stations, they both bring something a little different to the table. When I really want to rock out- its 105.3, but sometimes some of their songs get old (they really got to stop playing Gorillaz Feel Good Inc. & Staind's Right Here) and I'll go to 99X to avoid all the Staind/Godsmack-types for a while. Additionally there are some cool songs 99X plays that 105.3 does not (and vice-versa). However, like mentioned on these boards, between 92.9/99.7/105.3 (and really 96.1/97.1 as well) something is going to have to give sooner or later...just not room for all 5......Overnights seem to be a daypart that Clear Channel keeps live/local. 96rock rarely voice-tracks overnights (even on the weekends when at times the voice-track almost all of the rest of the day).

You are HIGH. Clear Channel keeping overnights live and local? Jeez! They'd TURN THE TRANSMITTERS OFF IF THEY COULD GET AWAY WITH IT!

I'm working on a story about 99X right now. Anybody not connected with Atlanta radio willing to talk to me on the record about 99X as a fan, or former fan? My phone is 404-526-5688 and email is [email protected].

I agree with the front part of this. And I suspect that's what Cumulus is going to do. There have already been murmurs that 99x was going to cede the younger crowd and stop playing so much of the Fall Out Boy type stuff. But I think the station will be off-footed until they can find somebody to take the reigns. So the comparison may be premature - better to wait and see how it's going three months from now.But your comment about 99x losing people to the Buzz is kinda misleading. Neither Chris Williams nor Whip left amicably. (Ie - nobody left 99x to "move up" to the Buzz - they went there because it was the next option.) On the other hand, Dekker and Ben both left the Buzz voluntarily to head to 99x. That's not to say that the Buzz is inferior, only that I don't see what 99x's departures have to do with the equation. The Buzz's existence all along was to be a thorn in 99x's side, and hiring Chris (and Whip) to enact some revenge certainly fits that purpose. If it makes it a better station and helps Clear Channel with revenue, all the better.

I admit to being older and not in the group The Buzz is trying to woo. DaveFM is probably the only music station in the city I feel that I could leave on from across the room and not need to run over and change due to constant crappy music (I don't like everything they play...if I heard Dave Matthews I'd trip over my feet trying to run to the off button).Anyway, your comparisions of the two stations was trying to put Buzz in a positive light. Your good reasons for listening are the reason I won't listen. Even though I'm older I don't dislike hard rockin' music. Give me Social Distortion, ACDC, Wire, Gang Of Four, crunchy Neil Young, The Fall, Ministry or a host of older punk bands and I'm there. I just hate that 90's post-Pearl Jam grunge-lite and rap rock. But thankfully, there is a tuner knob so I don't have to listen.

And we were all wondering too what hard music you liked. Thanks for the enlightenment. After reading Missanthrope's (is that a bitter 'she' or a guy who cain't spell?) and this last post I think it might come down to...You're too old and aren't supposed to "get" it. It's passed you by. Hey, I think Dave is playing "under my thumb" you better get back to listening

I actually like them both. It just depends on what I'm in the mood to listen to. Does anybody just listen to one station? There are probably four different stations I would say I listen to on a regular basis.

That's funny, I've stopped listening to DaveFM because I got sick of tripping over myself everytime Dave Matthews came on. The Buzz is a refreshing change, I like their playlist.
