The Buzz's Format Tweaks

Would you all agree that we can stop calling the Buzz a purely Alternative station? Between the occasional Classic Rock cuts (I heard Ozzy last night) and all of the Classic Alternative, it seems that the Buzz is moving more toward the AOR/Active Rock direction. Clearly, part of this was a reaction to the demise of 93 Rock.

Active Rock no question. The real question is do the numbers improve. This station has been hovering in the 1 ratings neighborhood for years. Still can't believe that CBS has done nothing about improving the station. The all important morning drive is horrible.

OK!!! More classic altenative: GOOD!! All this damm ozzy and def leppard: NO GOOD!!
I guess the dimise of 93 ROCK they didn't get the hint. I guess soon it will be the dimise of 103.1 the buzz. I can't believe John O connell would let that happen. When I hear the DJ'S on the Buzz say what they played especally if it is one of those classic rock songs they sound like they want to say get this crap of the buzz.

I heard yesterday on the Gater: Nickleback

I heard on the Buzz at the same time: Pink floyd comfortbly Numb.

Something is wrong with this picture.

T.J.

That vo guy dumped the gator and big in miami to handle the buzz. Willing to bet that there is no uptick in ratings for the format change. For a station owned by CBS, they have no clue.

John O'Connell's focus is not on the Buzz - 8 to 5 his focus is on sister AC Sunny 104.3, the cluster cash cow.

Remember, during the CBS Layoff Bloodbath of 2009, Rick Shockley relinquished (figuratively) the PD chair at Sunny to O'Connell. Rick's still got a job, but John has his hands full.

Where would you put your resources? A solid-ratings AC biller or the Rock station straddling a 2 share?

Well John should shift his focus because the Buzz is a mess and for the most part the rest of the WPB cluster seems to be doing well.

Active Rock no question...

Active rock, indeed...yet still the occasional Cypress Hill & House Of Pain tracks, and a substantial amount of Sublime, which, IIRC, all fared well on the modern rock charts but did not really impact mainstream or active.

All this alternative crap needs to go. This ended 10 years ago. Active Rock reigns supreme in music/ratings and what people want to hear in rock..
Disturbed
Godsmack
Avenge Seven
Nickleback
Five Finger Death Punch
Stone Sour

I can go on and on. What failed on 93 Rock? Them not playing enough "New Active Rock"
They played 1-2 songs per hour.. some recurrents..and most from the 90s thats been
way over played.

People want to hear New Music in their 20 minute drive to work or the store. Or they want
to hear a popular old song : That ISN'T Played 24/7 all the time. Maybe a old Hair Band,
Metal or 90s Grunge that isnt overplayed through out the country.

You stick people with New Music 60%, 20 % Recurrents,20% classics from Hair,metal,grunge.. you will get people listening.. then you need that great personalitys that connect with the audiance.. good morning drive... and play Music.. Music and more Music!

btw ... example.. rock945.com out of Washington..listen to their music and playlist on yes.com KHTQ.... there are many stations that play this music.. and it's the current top 25 Active rock!

Nice, so you want to compare a Rock station from market 91 to a station that can be heard in South Florida. Interesting.

If you're going to bring up a Rock station from the great state of Washington you might want to bring up Seattle's KISW 99.9. Not that Seattle and WPB are all that similar, but at least Seattle is a much bigger market, and is just as wealthy. KISW isn't really an Active Rock station, but it's not Modern Rock either. It's more Mainstream Rock, playing some Hard Rock, some Modern Rock, and some Classic Rock. It's number 2 in shares in its market, and Top 10 in cume.

Similarly, in Philadelphia there's a very successful Mainstream Rock station called WMMR 93.3. Like KISW, it too is a heritage Rock station that's been around for ages. WMMR plays everything from Aerosmith and Tom Petty to Papa Roach and Foo Fighters. Oh, they'll even play some Bob Marley for ya. The station is Top 5 in shares, and Top 10 in cume.

To find a successful Hard Rock station you'd have to go to Detroit, and the difference between sunny South Florida and Michigan is like night and day. Detroit's got 101.1 WRIF, one of those rare stations that can get away with playing Iron Maiden and Pantera in all dayparts. But even WRIF isn't really an Active Rock station as most of its music playlist isn't current based. For example, Pantera's "Cemetary Gates" is the 15th most played song on the station.

You can find a similar sounding station out west in Phoenix with 98 KUPD, although it's a bit more current based, and more Modern Rock friendly. Then again, Guns N Roses "You Could Be Mine" is among the 25 most played songs on the station. In Minneapolis the closest thing to this type of sound is 93 X, KKXR. It's even more Modern Rock friendly than KUPD, but also more current based. Sure it'll play plenty of Metallica, but you'll also hear records by Cage The Elephant, or even "The Bartender Song" by Rehab. The closest thing to Active Rock in San Diego is Rock 105.3 KIOZ yet due to low ratings the station's music mix is primarily on the Modern Rock side.

What about Denver? The market used to be big on Hard Rock. Well, Triple A and Progressive Rock have always been bigger. So the Active Rock station, 106.7 KBPI is ranked below the Triple A and Modern Rock stations.
Tampa also used to have a thriving Hard Rock, and Death Metal scene. In recent years we've seen WXTB 98 Rock struggling in the ratings, but it seems like noadays the station's stable ratings-wise. It's Top 10 in shares, and cume.

Question: How many successful Active Rock stations are there in the Top 20 major markets?
Answer: Not many. One of the few success stories in Tampa's 98 Rock.

Question: How many successful Active Rock stations are there in Florida's major markets?
Answer: Zero Rock stations in Miami, Tampa's got both Active and Modern Rock stations.
Orlando? Both the Modern and Classic Rock stations are now among the lowest rated full-market signals in the market both in cume and share. In Jacksonville you can find a pretty successful Modern Rocker in 102.9 X. Then again, Jax has always been the one large FL market where Modern Rock has always performed well (going back to the 90s when Planet was on the 93.3 signal).

???

Is this post based on your personal taste?

Active Rock does better than Alternative in 6 of the top 20 markets - Alternative does better than Active in 12 of them

Yeah. If anything, Modern Rock radio seems to be the format trending upwards in several high-profile markets, much moreso than Active Rock.
