Nice, so you want to compare a Rock station from market 91 to a station that can be heard in South Florida. Interesting.
If you're going to bring up a Rock station from the great state of Washington you might want to bring up Seattle's KISW 99.9. Not that Seattle and WPB are all that similar, but at least Seattle is a much bigger market, and is just as wealthy. KISW isn't really an Active Rock station, but it's not Modern Rock either. It's more Mainstream Rock, playing some Hard Rock, some Modern Rock, and some Classic Rock. It's number 2 in shares in its market, and Top 10 in cume.
Similarly, in Philadelphia there's a very successful Mainstream Rock station called WMMR 93.3. Like KISW, it too is a heritage Rock station that's been around for ages. WMMR plays everything from Aerosmith and Tom Petty to Papa Roach and Foo Fighters. Oh, they'll even play some Bob Marley for ya. The station is Top 5 in shares, and Top 10 in cume.
To find a successful Hard Rock station you'd have to go to Detroit, and the difference between sunny South Florida and Michigan is like night and day. Detroit's got 101.1 WRIF, one of those rare stations that can get away with playing Iron Maiden and Pantera in all dayparts. But even WRIF isn't really an Active Rock station as most of its music playlist isn't current based. For example, Pantera's "Cemetary Gates" is the 15th most played song on the station.
You can find a similar sounding station out west in Phoenix with 98 KUPD, although it's a bit more current based, and more Modern Rock friendly. Then again, Guns N Roses "You Could Be Mine" is among the 25 most played songs on the station. In Minneapolis the closest thing to this type of sound is 93 X, KKXR. It's even more Modern Rock friendly than KUPD, but also more current based. Sure it'll play plenty of Metallica, but you'll also hear records by Cage The Elephant, or even "The Bartender Song" by Rehab. The closest thing to Active Rock in San Diego is Rock 105.3 KIOZ yet due to low ratings the station's music mix is primarily on the Modern Rock side.
What about Denver? The market used to be big on Hard Rock. Well, Triple A and Progressive Rock have always been bigger. So the Active Rock station, 106.7 KBPI is ranked below the Triple A and Modern Rock stations.
Tampa also used to have a thriving Hard Rock, and Death Metal scene. In recent years we've seen WXTB 98 Rock struggling in the ratings, but it seems like noadays the station's stable ratings-wise. It's Top 10 in shares, and cume.
Question: How many successful Active Rock stations are there in the Top 20 major markets?
Answer: Not many. One of the few success stories in Tampa's 98 Rock.
Question: How many successful Active Rock stations are there in Florida's major markets?
Answer: Zero Rock stations in Miami, Tampa's got both Active and Modern Rock stations.
Orlando? Both the Modern and Classic Rock stations are now among the lowest rated full-market signals in the market both in cume and share. In Jacksonville you can find a pretty successful Modern Rocker in 102.9 X. Then again, Jax has always been the one large FL market where Modern Rock has always performed well (going back to the 90s when Planet was on the 93.3 signal).
