THE "C" WORD

What is the general feeling about creating sales positions by commission only?

Do experienced salespeople still frown at working by commission only, or has the current economic climate changed the frame of mind.

When I managed a station, I had a horrible experience attempting to pay sales people a salary instead of commission. I would never do it again. Commissions make a salesman hungry and that means revenue and clients. In this crisis, it means harder and smarter work.

I agree 100% All commission or small DRAW and comission is the best. I too had a horrible experience with "salaied" salespeople, one of whom hung out in a bar all day.

Yeah I used to do sales back in the early/mid 90's, and at that time new hires were given a base salary for the first 8 months to build up a client base, but then strictly commission. It was funny how many people would work 7 months than quit.... Worked well for me though, I did quite well taking over their acccounts.

In my market (top 15), generally the only salespeople on salary or guarantee are newbies or veteran reps who are recruited from the competition and given a guarantee of usually 6 months to a year. Stations will also usually put the sales staff on salary for awhile if they change format. I have to admit, in the current business climate a salary sounds pretty damn attractive.
