The Cannons

So recently the smaller sister station of our larger market sports station just north of us changed the programming at the station and put the Cannons on from 12-4.
I had never heard the show so I gave it a listen, then I decided it was so bad I would try to listen in short bursts, still no luck at all, it truly is just terrible radio!
Steve is ok, not the best but ok, Pat must have the fluffiest carpet in his studio with all the name dropping he does and all I can think of when I hear him is his VM scandal a few years back and I hear "Let'sgo crazy, get a hooker & some coke!" and Vic, oh Vic, I wanted to like you and your "everyman" persona but it's just not working, it's just BAD!
I have NO idea how that qualifies as quality radio let alone quality sports talk, any ideas anyone?
I mean what could Don Martin be thinking?
The Cannons should be muzzled permannently!

This may play well in LA, but not on a national stage. Just horrible radio.

Some big story breaks and all they start off their radio show is what they did over the weekend.

Vic the Brick has done too much drugs in his life and just rambles on about nothing. What is funny is how often Hartman and POB has to interupt him to stop his ramblings, the only entertaining part of the show. How did Vic the Brick ever get an Ivy League degree?

It doesn't play well in L.A. either.

...yeah, and I live in the L.A. area. I though Vic the Brick weird and annoying, but Pat O'Brien takes the cake, at least with the annoyance factor, especially with the name-dropping. I actually thought that O'Brien would be a much-needed and credible addition to the Cannons, but boy was I wrong :(

His "Baseball Report" segment has to be the worst thing I've ever heard...it was kinda "cute" in the beginning when it was him "re-capping" the day's baseball news, but it when morphed into what it is now, but became unlistenable. Just as worse is whenever they're interviewing guests, he sounds so smug and self-important when he introduces himself into the interviews, while probably half of the interviewees doesn't know or care who he is.

I also love how they repeat parts of their earlier broadcast in segments of their show as if it was live programing. Like when at the top of the 3rd hour which repeats the top of the 1st hour. Just filler material while they have their lunch break. Sometimes on the KLAC livefeed you can see POB put his feet on the studio desk while having a sandwich.

and yet the network people defend this show. I've repeatedly complained about this show to my affiliate rep, especially the repetition of segments which he of course denies.

Do they have pictures of Don Martin that he doesn't want seen?

Now instead of a baseball report, they have Football. Totally uninteresting, unoriginal programing.

Indeed...I was listening to the Cannons a few minutes before writing this post (first time I've listened in weeks), and the "Football" segment came on. I could only last 20 seconds before switching off, and started listening to something else. Just absolutely dreadful!

sportschick I feel you

You need to voice your complaints to Don Martin directly... affiliate reps are glorified sales guys.
But I don't get the Cannons. They filled in for our local show and it was just an embarasment to our craft... sad truly.

The only thing worse right now is Z&J but they are on from 3-6am in LA so it will never get the attention for its putridness that it deserves.

From the Orange County Register (dated 3-10-11): "Don Martin, vice president and general manager for Fox Sports Radio and KLAC/570 AM, said, "A good personality will generate complaint calls to your office, fans will call for him to be fired, he/she will make you nervous or uncomfortable from time to time, and you will have to protect them. He/she also will increase your station's ratings and revenue."

OR... it will make your product look like a laughing stock, will NOT resonate with the listeners you want - ie: hardcore sports fans and will cause them to turn the dial to their local ESPN affiliate or Yahoo sports affiliate.
It just seems to me that Martin is looking to have less of a sports oriented product and rather have a hybrid sports/entertainment/guy talk mix which is fine except you're calling it "Sports" when it's clearly NOT!
So it seems that rather being known for quality sports talk Don Martin wants FSR to be known for "pushing the envelope" and being "entertaining" than informative for fans.

Since most FSR affiliates are owned by CC and thus land-locked to a perpetual FSR affiliation, none of this matters.

Yes, said stations won't draw anything for ratings, but the format is still a revenue ATM. Money will still be made with a format that spits out money regardless of how little listeners they get. It still makes the overall cluster happy, and as most affils have no local talent, the CC bean-counters in San Antonio pay no mind.

Thus, Don Martin's job will never be in jeopardy.
