WTDY/AM 1670 radio personalities Tim Morrissey and John "Sly" Sylvester got their knickers in knots this week over knitting.Morrissey reported that he was "stunned" when he tuned in Monday night's Madison School Board meeting on television and saw brand new board member Lucy Mathiak knitting.Morrissey said in a telephone interview that he considers it rude, and mentioned it on air Tuesday. Sly then continued to needle Mathiak about her knitting habit for several hours, and it has been a running thread on the station's programs this week.Calls to a listeners' poll at the station are running 3-1 against knitting at meetings, according to the station's Web site.

Another etiquette controversy arose in Madison this week, when a couple of on-air personalities at WTDY/AM 1670, Tim Morrissey and John "Sly" Sylvester, criticized a new School Board member, Lucy Mathiak, for knitting during Monday's School Board meeting.

Yates, like Mathiak, was defiant in her response: "Men like Mr. Sowry can do only one thing at a time. Most women, like me, can actually multitask: knit, listen and think at the same time."

Five years ago I did a column on Baloney Bingo, which is actually called "Bull-t Bingo," but I changed it to baloney for the newspaper.It is played like traditional bingo, except that rather than numbers, the bingo squares contain words and phrases that one is likely to hear at a meeting. A School Board meeting, for instance.The words and phrases on the Baloney Bingo card included "result-driven," "synergy," "at the end of the day," "win-win," "knowledge base," "proactive," "empower," "outside the box," "fast track," "mindset" and several others that are heard all too frequently at meetings, conferences and seminars.

WTDY-AM 1670's John "Sly" Sylvester found a fight to pick with new Madison School Board member Lucy Mathiak after her first meeting. Over what? During the meeting, Mathiak was knitting.Sly and his colleagues criticized her and even ran an online poll over whether she should be knitting during meetings, which drew an angry response from Mathiak. (73 percent said no.) His conclusion in his blog is that, "she lacks two very important things a politician should have. First of all - good manners, and secondly a good sense of humor!"But Sly, haven't you heard? Knitting is hot! Julia Roberts knits. So do Sarah Jessica Parker, Sandra Bullock and Russell Crowe. Heck, Hilary Swank chatted about knitting with David Letterman. There's even slang for Mathiak's behavior: It's called "KIPing," short for knitting in public. ...

Sly responsible for moments of silence!John "Sly" Sylvester was quiet. It happened Tuesday morning around 11:15 a.m.Well, he actually may have been saying any number of choice words, but his listeners on WTDY-AM 1670 didn't hear them because he'd just spilled a can of Diet Mountain Dew on the $16,000 audio console, thus knocking his station off the air.WTDY did come back on the air, temporarily operating out of the studio for sister station WTUX-AM, while the engineering staff worked overnight to replace the console with a spare. Sly, admitting he's under a lot of stress lately, 'fessed up to his fizzy mess, saying, "What's embarrassing is I did something a rookie would do. Everybody's teasing me, saying, 'Should we get Sly a sippy cup?"
