The "Car Pro" Show

On Saturdays at 11 am, the Car Pro Show with Jerry Reynolds and Kevin McCarthy has aired locally for many years on AM 740 KTRH. Sometime this year, the exact same show started to be aired at the same time on AM 610 KILT with maybe a few seconds delay. That's two separate, competing radio stations with exactly the same program. Until recently, I assumed that a nationally broadcast show was restricted to one station in each market, at least as far as the same day and time were concerned. I checked the Car Pro website and found that Houston is unique across 29 US markets. Dallas has 2 stations carrying the show, but WBAP airs it at 11 am, while KRLD carries it at 2 pm. (https://www.carprousa.com/radio-and-tv-schedules-2).

3 questions: I'm wondering if anyone knows why KTRH does not have exclusive rights to air the Car Pro show on Saturdays at 11 am; why KILT would even want to carry the show at the same time that it's being broadcast on KTRH; and why the Car Pro show would allow the same program to be heard at the same time on 2 different stations in the same market (seems like the show would get more overall listeners by requiring 2 stations in the same market to at least broadcast the show at different times.)

Personally, my favorite car show is the "Car Doctor" show on KSEV AM 700 on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2pm. "Skeeter" and his guests are hilarious and very insightful on car maintenance and repair issues, plus it's all local ... (www.texascardoctor.com) and (www.skeetersauto.com)

I think this is a paid show, and it's not unusual for paid shows to air on multiple shows in the same market. It's happened with a few financial shows.

It also helps that this is a Texas-based show. As you say, it already airs on two stations in Dallas, where the show originates, and now it'll air on two stations in Houston.

In Dallas, the Car Pro show is run on the same day, but 3 hours apart, which equals exclusivity. Nowhere else in the US on its other 28 affiliates is this show broadcast on 2 stations in the same market. It seems nutty that KTRH would run the show if it did not have exclusive broadcast rights for that day/time, or why the Car Pro show would want the same show running simultaneously = audience dilution for its long-running affiliate, KTRH. There's a boatload of home-improvement/financial-advice/car-shows, but in 50 years, I've never heard simultaneous airing in the same market. I invite readers to name one other radio show that is broadcast simultaneously on competing stations.
