The Cavs Are Hiring

DToTheJ said:
And no pressure, but you'll have big shoes to fill - those of 39-year play-by-play announcer Joe Tait.

Good luck. You'll need it if you're joining the Cavs organization, period.

http://news-herald.com/articles/2011/05/03/sports/nh3962855.txt

For all intents and purposes, Mike Snyder and Jim Chones have the insider's track at succeeding Tait. This is just so that the organization can cover it's tracks in a legal sense. But it would be a massive upset for Snites NOT to get the job when he's basically been Tait's understudy for 21 years.

Oh, and (no) thanks for the classless stab at the organization, DToTheJ. Typical outsider.

Actually, you can thank the NBA for their crappy favoritism structure that prevents teams like the Cavaliers to actually succeed. I like the team, and the people in it, but despise the league with ever aching bone in my body. The NBA has ruined professional basketball beyond repair... and I hope it ultimately fails.

I'm not ruling out the possibility that they can be "wowed" by someone, but I'd be nearly shocked if it wasn't Mike Snyder and Jim Chones at least for 2011-2012 (or whenever the NBA actually has a season next).

Mike really deserves it, and did a great job filling in during Joe's absence.

I think the only reason he doesn't get it because he doesn't "want it", but I think that's probably not likely.

As for Chones, I think they do want to go to a two-man booth with an analyst, and a popular ex-player who also filled in for Tait alongside Mike Snyder is a logical choice.

I know Snider is a respected broadcaster and Chones is a fan fav former player. Both do well at whatever it is they do. Snider has become somewhat of an AM radio sports giant in this town. Who has more cred than he does in town??

BUT...BUT...BUT...

I did not enjoy thier broadcasts of Cavs games, at all. I thought it was boring, drone and in the case of Chones, really lacking the insight that a guy in his position SHOULD be giving.

I, personally, hope these guys dont get, or want, the job and they go in another direction. Dan Gilbert seems like a guy who would go younger and fresher in that role. As good as these two are at other aspects of thier careers, they are neither young and definately not "fresh" in this role.

Being very familiar with all the TV and radio teams of the teams in this town, and an avid listener of Paul Keels on the Ohio State radio network, there would be no doubt that if Snider and Chones get this job full time, they will be dead last amongst the list of Keels and Lachey, Keels and Ron Stokes, Donovan and Dieken, Hamilton and Hegan (and Rosenhaus), plus all the local TV teams.

This is not an assasanation of Mike Snider or Jim Chones, not at all. They are highly respected and deserve to be recognized as such. I just think that the Cavaliers need to go in a newer, fresher direction with this decision.

Dont shoot me, traditionalists...

That's why I said I expected them to stay with Mike and Jim for at least one season.

But you're right...it's very possible Dan Gilbert will want to put his own "stamp" on the radio broadcasts, and make a clean break from the Tait Era. After all, he did dump Michael Reghi.

Is there anyone in Detroit he likes? ;)

There is. Much like McCloud, a Cleveland native, to boot. Should be interesting. Its no secret who Im referring to. Think real hard, old WHK fans....

How about... Matt Dery?

With a resume eerily similar to Fred McCloud's, Dery was at first a Cleveland sportscaster (at WHK) before becoming a part of the Pistons Radio Network (first by WDFN-AM, now with WXYT A/F).

If Snites DOESN'T get the job for whatever reason, Dery all along has been my second choice.

A wild card has also been longtime WEOL PBP voice/sales/sports director Tim Alcorn, but I'm not sure if Dan really wants to go small market here.

And one thing that made Joe stand out all of these years: he was probably one of the last, if not THE last solo PBP voice in all of the NBA. Whomever gets the job will have a color analyst whether we like it or not. Chones may be selected if not just to retain continuity in some way, just like Austin Carr was retained after McCloud replaced Reghi...

Mike Snyder is everything that is GOOD in this business. I don't think I have ever heard a disparaging comment about him personally or professionally. In this business that's beyond rare.

He's a good man.

When you do the blog I do, you hear all sorts of "behind the scene" stories about local media types...some good, some not so good.

I'll echo the previous message. From everything I've heard since I started the blog in 2005, I've NEVER heard anything but praise for how Mike Snyder conducts himself. I've not heard one comment that doesn't start with "great guy", and from a wide variety of people who have worked with him, met him or interacted with him professionally.

I hope to meet him someday.

I totally agree. And like OMW, I really hope to meet Mike one day.

Cavs Radio:
Mike Snyder and Jim Chones*

Cavs TV:
Fred McLeod, Austin Carr, and Jeff Phelps (sidelines)

Buckyes Radio (basketball):
Paul Keels and Ron Stokes

Ben Holden

Al Pawlowski

Give 'em all a letter grade.

(*) - I'm considering Snyder/Chones as the incumbent Cavs team

Fred McLeod, Austin Carr, and Jeff Phelps (sidelines) (C)

I think Snyder and Chones, especially Snyder, improved somewhat as the season progressed. Again, I'd love to see Mike get the gig.

But I'm one of those "old fashioned" types, and maybe Dan Gilbert wants flash and dash.

My opinion about his doing Cavaliers play-by-play in no way goes against him personally. I while Im not as connected as some here, I too have heard nothing but wonderful things about him.

OK, let's rate the local sports PBP teams:

Indians Radio:
Tom Hamilton, Mike Hegan, and Jim Rosenhaus
A-. Bothered me that Tom Hamilton was so vocal against the fans when people continued to be upset with Jim Thome. I didnt care for his attitude during that.

Indians TV:
Matt Underwood, Rick Manning, and Katie Witham (field reporter)
A+. Love them, do a great job.

Browns Radio:
Jim Donovan, Doug Dieken, and Jamir Hamilton (sidelines)
B. Diekk mumbles and says things that are out of place at times and Donovan gets too excited too quickly and shouts too much for me.

Cavs Radio:
Mike Snyder and Jim Chones*
C. Just didnt care for them at all this past season. Perhaps they will grow on me if they get the gig.

Cavs TV:
Fred McLeod, Austin Carr, and Jeff Phelps (sidelines)
C. Like Phelps and AC is a sentimental fav, but strictly for broadcasting, I think they arent all that strong. Phelps is prob the strongest of the 3.

Buckeyes Radio (football):
Paul Keels, Jim Lachey, and Marty Bannister (sidelines)
A+. Solid.

Buckyes Radio (basketball):
Paul Keels and Ron Stokes
A+. Again, solid. Nothing special, but high quality and entertaining.

Monsters Radio:
Ben Holden
A+. Had little interest in Monsters hockey, at all, til I heard a broadcast and really fell for Holden and his work. I still would rather listen than watch on TV. He is going places and wont be in the minors for long.

Gladiators Radio:
Mike Case and Hanford Dixon
(Never heard.)

CSU Radio:
Al Pawlowski
(Never heard.)

Give 'em all a letter grade.

I have met Snyder a few times, a couple at remotes, and once I was announcing at a marching band show where he was emcee. Every bit a gentleman and every bit a pro.

hmm, to bad that Ted Williams couldn't keep it together long enough. Dan gilbert seemed to be a fan of him when he was in the spotlight
