The CBS 2025-2026 season thread

Here's the problem: Matlock's original run was 30-40 years ago, and it appealed to an over-50 audience even then. Yeah, some younger people have seen it in re-runs, but if you built it on the back of the original, the audience that would get it without a ton of backstory and character expositon would be over 80.

Better to start fresh, acknowledge the name (because even most of those who haven't seen the original have heard about it), and move on.
Okay, but then why even call it Matlock? The brand is either worth enough to use, or not worth enough that people will even care. So you might as well set it in the same universe or a version of the same universe. You don't even have to worry about the back story and character exposition, because none of that stuff even matters, because as you point out, nobody really remembers. Sure, some diehard fans are going to complain, but clearly that's not something the entertainment industry cares about anymore.

That remains to be seen. If the new "Matlock" succeeds, then you can argue that it was a good move.

They're gonna play this as the lady lawyer who just happens to have the same name as an old TV lawyer, and that becomes a running joke. Okay. It would take having the rights to the "Matlock" name to do that anyway, so---it was their call.

In which case, the name would be worthless, and we don't know whether it is yet.

Nobody's gonna lose sleep over this, whichever way it goes.

Why do they need a backstory. The title of the show is the backstory already.

Who is still alive from the original show. Not that they could make a cameo. We are going back 30 years. Wasn’t it on NBC as well.

(Screen goes all wavy, harp music plays)

Or just start fresh with a new idea.

Alright @michael hagerty and @AbrahamJSimpson

I gave Matlock a shot just to see Kathy Bates, thought it was middle of the road some some very amusing moments. But then the twist ending occurred (and it was soapy and twisted) and totally unexpected. Whoa. Well done!

Critics have seen the first six episodes and it’s getting great reviews.

I had watched a partial sneak preview last month here at the station and was neutral on it which contributed to my lack of enthusiasm but it definitely give away the twist which I won’t share and not to spoil anyone on it.
