'The Chew' getting chewed in the ratings

http://www.welovesoaps.net/2011/10/daytimeoct7.html

For the show's first week (of Sept 26):
total viewers - 2.1 million
women 25-54 demo - 1.0 rating
women 18-49 - .7 rating
women 18-34 - .5 rating

Week of Oct 3:
total viewers - 1.78 million (-322,000 viewers from previous week)
women 25-54 - .8 rating
women 18-49 - .6 rating
women 18-34 - .4 rating

Compare to All My Children from a year ago:
total viewers - 2.43 million
women 25-54 - 1.3 rating
women 18-49 - .9 rating
women 18-34 - .5 rating

True, but is it making money? I imagine the Chew is a lot cheaper to make, so ABC may be making more money with less viewers.

The title of the show seems odd to me. "chew"...when you think of what that really means, it is not very appetizing. Just one eater's opinion.

I agree. Is The Chew to be followed by Swallow, then the Belch? ;D

"Belch," or some other process.
Who knows what thought process went into that nugget?
Probably got selected because it rhymed with "View."

And then by the "$#&* My Dad Says"?

Oh, been there?

I also think "The Chew" was chosen as the title since
it rhymes with "The View." I don't think "The Talk" on
CBS is doing as well in the ratings as "ATWT," but again,
the costs are lower and the profits potentially higher (as I've said
before, Procter & Gamble was actually losing money on
"ATWT" and "GL"); likewise, "Let's Make A Deal" has to be more
profitable than "GL" and is getting better ratings on the morning
stations than "GL" did.

But if "The Chew" does tank, I think ABC will try another lifestyle
show; I don't see a triumphant return of "AMC" at 1/12 (or the
debut of any other soap, for that matter).

BTW, some of you may have been curious as to how some Central
time zone markets, such as Dallas and San Antonio, would handle
the scheduling of "The Chew." WFAA and KSAT are running it on
a day-behind at 11 AM. Why neither station can't move its midday
news to 11 AM and run "The Chew" in-pattern at 12 is beyond me;
after all, Oklahoma City and Birmingham did it with "AMC" and both
are airing "The Chew" at 12.

Also, probably because "chew the fat" is slang for talk.

So does The Spew

Which is what I want to do after watching The View....or any of these morning shows, for that matter.

The chew is making money because its so cheap to produce. However its killing the rest of ABC daytime. 2 weeks before the chew started OLTL was #2 overall in soaps. For the week of October 3-7 (last weeks won't be public until Friday) it was 2nd to last, with ABC's other soap General Hospital in dead last. The soap has lost a full rating point in the month. This after havning monthly gains since April, and despite gaining viewers since April, the loss the show has had just in one month was so great that its actually has lower ratings then it did a year ago.

Days of our lives use to be last, and had been in last place for a few years now. However that show has leaped over both GH & OLTL for 3rd place.

I suspect ABC affiliates will be feeling the Jay Leno effect for their 4, 5, & 6:00PM news soon. If they still had Oprah as a strong anchor to leadin they would be fine, but with the newly destroyed ABC daytime, that is only gonna get worse in January..watch out.

Or the "Heartburn?" ;D ;D

And may I ask--what types of commercials air during "The Chew"--are they "normal" (but more food-oriented) commercials or are they the typical scooter-store, lawyer, insurance ads that seem to dominate "Price is Right" breaks in recent years? Have there actually been any heartburn medication ads that actually aired during "The Chew" (e.g. Beano, Prilosec OTC, etc.). I can't help but wonder. :D :D

You're likely correct, but this is why it was such a good time to make the change. This way any downside can be blamed on Oprah leaving whether or not it actually was that. At least for the stations that aired both "Oprah" and "The Chew"

Why not create a talk show that is part "The View", part TMZ? I know that in Spanish language television, more specifically Univision, "El Gordo y la Flaca" does this and captivates a large female daytime audience. They could have celebrity interviews and a discussion on celebrity gossip/entertainment news at the beginning of the show. Less focused on lifestyle, more on gossip.
